View Full Version : Never fear the Squid again!

I came here after speaking to Asmodeus just to write a reply in the "Where have they all gone" thread......

After reading through the forums a little, I had to make a new thread (in honour of days gone by) to say that this still looks like a fantastic community! I don't know why this place has always attracted such a special group of people who have no fear in sharing in fun and frolics and calamari!

There are still some of the old time greats - I wont name people because I dont want to miss someone out and make them cry (like Durf - he's always blubbing when he's left in a corner by himself for a few minutes!! It's his fault anyway! ;)) And there are loads of new faces (probably have been here for YEARS!) who have added their own little special something.

It's really great to know that this place is not only surviving, but positively thriving! :) I am honoured to have had a small hand in the creation of this place and it is great to see when something grows way beyond its initial starting point! I don't feel any nostalgia at all.... mostly because nothing has gone... it all looks just as good as it was all those years ago.... and better!

So *raises glass with one arm round the Giant Squid* Here's to you guys and I hope you all have many more happy years here!

Cheers one and all

Drystan..... what has this to do with the squid?? Arrr, where's the ancient warning tablet when you need it? Have you not been beset by the squid in times past? I'd be surprised to find that my old adversary doesnt lurk here still! :o

Dark Matter - thanks! 1.11 now huh? I seem to recall hearing good things about it.

Actually, I dont have the game here... I now live in Thailand and most of my CD's are stashed away back in the UK. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to pick up a copy as many people over here love the game too. I can probably get one of those all in 1 pack thingamees for the equivalent of a few pounds. I shall check it out, playing Titan Quest has reawoken a soft spot in me for hack and slash fests! :)

I'm thinking it got deleted in the '03 crash nick...

Hi, and welcome to the SPF (wehavebeenaroundforawhilehaventwe)

Be sure to read the stickies and FAQ's, join some tournaments and drop by the EMB for a drink or two. And watch out for the shinkickers. Have a set of shinguards, they'll help a little, as they have pdr 10%...

*Faintly remembers hearing the nickname before*

errr... welcome back then, I guess. The above advice still hlds true, as there might be new info :P
and the EMB thing is definitely good advice

Tourneys can be either/or or both SC and HC.

There are now a couple of generally accepted mods - RRM (Red Rune Mod - does what is says on the can, turns all runes red so they are easier to spot) and RWM (RuneWords Mod - allows SP players to make all the Ladder Runewrds too)

Some players play Vanilla - no mods at all, some play RRM only some (like me) play RRM/RWM. The MP games should say what mods are accepted. Some like Frostburn play both Vanilla and Modded and have separate stashes.

ATMA is now 5.05 and has a drop calc.
Flavie is also used to post grails and tourney updates on the web (here's an example from the current untwinked tourney http://www.freewebs.com/nubikoen/ )

Both ATMA and Flavie DLs are in the Sticky, as is the DL for the RRM/RWM

Actually, that would be Thyiad.:wink3:

I play Vanilla only, no mods whatsoever. When MP'ing, I supply my MP chars with vanilla-only items from my SP stashes, and as I do not mule off when MP'ing, I have no problems with those MP chars becoming tainted with RWM/RRM. I do not maintain MP stashes, however, I do mule between my MP-only chars. Basically, whatever items go on to MP, stays in MP, forever.

Lately, Thyiad has had this odd desire to build a vanilla-only MP char, which is why any games I've been hosting recently is vanilla only.

@Spearthrower: Thailand eh? How are you finding it? Is the humidity bearable? I presume you are in Bangkok? If so, is it better to walk rather than drive? I do know they have lots of squid over there, so you should be a happy bunny.

Yep - Bangkok - I've been here for over 3 years now!! and I still find it extremely humid! My apartment never really goes below 30c even in the wee hours of the morning! I would never drive in this country for 2 reasons: 1) Because there are already squillions of cars on the road - even at 4am I have to wait for the traffic to cross my road.... and 2) Because the kind, gentle, friendly Thai people all turn into monsters when they get behind the wheel of a car - no one gives 2 hoots about minor things such as lanes, or pavements, or other cars!

Nope, pedestrianism is a way of life for me

08-09-2006, 15:45
Welcome back! Yeah, there were a couple of forum moves or something when we all had to reregister our nicknames.

It's been pretty stable, except for some squid attacks, since summer of 03, though.

I'd recommend staying Vanilla with the new patch until you get used to it. There are a lot of changes from 1.09 to 1.11. Mercs can now be hired at a level one below your character's. So it's much easier to switch if you want. They also level a bit faster than they used to. Also, skill synergies make for interesting point allocation strategies.

That would also explain the differences in the boards - still the same day old blood colour, but there's something more swish about them now!

Depends on what your flavour is really. The generic advice is to build a sorc for Meph runs and a Necro summoner for level 85 area runs. But I reckon you already know that.
Sorcs: Meteorbs, Blizzballers, Pure Lightning, CL/FO.
Necros: Summoner, Boners, Poisonmancers.
Amazons: LF/FA, LF/Strafe/Multi.
Paladins: Zealots, Avengers, Hammerdins.
Assassins: Trapsin, Martial Artist (kickers, elemental)
Druids: Werewolves, Werebears, Summoners, Wind druids.
Barbs: Dunno, don't care.

The Sorc part yes.... but Necros weren't really empowered in 1.09.... I enjoyed playing them but they weren't high level farmers.... something's changed there!! :)

Repusz! Another person I have heard the occasional mention of their name over the years! If you joined in early 2002, then yes, it must have been a good few months later that I left - you're probably right, around the end of 2002 then!!! Still 4 years!! Good to see you here too!

Ah yes... the EMB.... havent really had a chance to talk about that with anyone. I heard about it on the grapevine but its more real being back here and everything..... I'll leave that for now.

"You still might want to read the FAQs, we have changed a few things, thgu hI'm sure it'll come back "

Read FAQ's? Ye GODS! What has happened? I think the old FAQ went something along the lines of

1) Ye Shall Not use the word idiot more than 3 times per sentence.
2) Ye Shall Not allow entry to anything large and aquatic with 8 arms.
3) It's Durf's fault.

Are you telling me that there's more to know now??

If you are talking about something like a "Titan Sorc", etc. I believe it refers to the magic affix "of the Titan", which adds to your strength. The general theory is to pump your strength and swing a big hurty two-hander at anything that is foolish enough to venture near. My (limited) understanding of the build is that you put ALL your stat points into STR. I've never been terribly interested in this type, so I'm not sure how they handle getting enough DEX to actually land a blow.

Anywho, welcome back! I recognize you, but back in 2001/2002/2003 I was mainly over in the [now defunct] Gen Strat forum (running with the Good Morning Group on BNet.) Heck, I even know what the [I want my mummy] you and Doc were talking about. Good to see you again!

Silly Spearthrower, I didn't remove your windows, I simply threw you out of one! :D

And as far as titan builds go, they're really not that great. You get a crap damage increase and some "bragging rights"(whatever those are good for) and you waste a lot of time. Attack rating is really best solved with a few charms, an Angelic Halo and Wings(+12 Attack rating/clvl per ring, two of them grants double the bonus, resulting in some nice AR boosts) and can be further pressed with an Eth rune to lower enemy defense.

Overall, titans are dumb. Very dumb.

Extremely dumb and... uh... stupid.

Yes.

Dumb and stupid.

Ahh - I'm still of the HC untwinked mindset (mostly because I dont have any equipment anymore) so I was thinking along the lines of AR solutions that dont require eq!! :)

Spear! I want my windows back!
A fishymancer (Zoo keeper, summonmancer) is a good place to start. They're safe and can take things down fairly quickly. The skeletons can actually survive! They can also wear a lot of MF and don't require too much equipment. Just a decent starting char to get some wealth, if you wanted to know.

Definitions of defenestration on the Web:

the act of throwing someone or something out of a window

Man. Serdash, how often do you use that word? I've never heard of it before, but for you to know it, you must use it fairly often. Fun words to use in daily speech? :)

What the [I want my mummy] are you guys talking about when you say [I want my mummy]? Seriously, where the [I want my mummy] did that come from or originate?

Drystan,

IIRC a hacker changed the word filter from *** to [I want my mummy] in the dim and distant past. Another did something involving the space bar, so you wouldn't get a space you'd get something else. At least, that's what I heard.

Before my time....

Drystan

I thought that defenestrate would be more amusing if it meant to remove windows... so I have decided to to define it thus!

All your windows are still belong to us!

Drystan - thanks for the ideas but i have already decided on one key thing. I am not going to mule at all ever again with D2.... I remember getting to the point where i had a separate hard drive for my Diablo finds and characters and I just dont want the hassle again! ;)

I am going to play totally non-twinked at all times. If that means vendoring uber Sorc gear I find with my barb, then so be it!! :wink2:

Nah, that was just how the filter worked back then, it was certainly more original than plain **. But the space character being made a swear word, that was done by a hacker. I just can't remember when that was, must've been early 2002.

Anyone else just have Giant Squid issues? He seems to have had a tentacle or 3 in the server then..... I chucked a nice shiny spear his way and he seems to have got the gist and left us alone!!

One thing I am really pleased to see over here now is a zero tolerance for hacks etc. That was always the way this place was in the past - across all the boards. But about the time I left a new acceptance seemed to spread that hacks and dupes were fine. I think the SP forum held out much longer than the other ones, but even here was being infected.

One of the things that stopped me playing D2 all those years ago was that I found, courtesy of Doc, that in the very very few trades I had made with forum members, I had received a number of dupes. That pretty much killed it for me - kind of took away the magic.

So, yes. I am really glad to see the strength of the anti-hack policy here, makes me feel a lot more inclined to play. ;)

Someone tell me how you do that? My total finds from the day I started playing years ago doesn't add up to 43%.

Apparently, I've got some innate anti-MF that is just killing it for me. I won't begin to describe the rubbish my builds carry (all self-found, no twinking allowed). IIRC, I'm in dire need of some WF. Wasn't that some kind of uber-MF capability?

Oh, and Arthurian Legend my *cough*, I know you better than that...more apt would be comparing it to Demolition Man. :)

Tragor, sorry to hear it mate. Don't get too downcast though, I haven't even started any MF runs yet, just persistently sending HC character after HC character through the game to oblivion. Hence most is lower stuff, I have about 70-80% of Normal Uniques and Normal Sets, but only about 20% of Exceptionals and about 3 Elites.

I seem to have lost the knack a little since my return and have got my last 5 serious characters to Hell, but had them fall somewhere between Act I and III. My last one was going great guns until I got impatient late at night and went teleporting...I can't believe I did that!

I think the Necro sounds cool though - this will be a real shock to see them in pwnage.... and I heard that some Pally build was ridiculously tough too?

In truth, I will probably start with a Barb or a Druid as melee is my kind of thang! ;)

If you want to push me in the right direction for a Barb now, then go ahead, I am all ears.... I was thinking of a 2handed Zerker?

P§ÝÇHÕ
11-09-2006, 11:49
For Barbs...your old school Whirler still does well. Concentration Barbs are also very viable. As for Druids, one of the most powerful classes is a Druid that utilises Cold Skills and the good old Werewolf is also worth a look-see.

Spearthrower
11-09-2006, 12:08
Of those, only whirlybarb and Werewolf really appeal. I doubt very much that they have changed WW so I am pretty confident on that class.... huge hp, huge damage, huge leech..... pretty viable first HC attempt I reckon. Now I am going to go and find a skill calculator as I am still having trouble remembering the tree :)

I remember lycanthropy, werewolf form, fury, (EDIT - wrong name) Oak Sage and I guess wolves/vine. (EDIT: Remembered Feral Rage) Wow, it really is wierd that I can remember so much when push comes to shove! You'd have thought that the corresponding grey matter in my brain would've realised its worthless existence and extincted (new word!) itself a long time ago!! ;)

Butzull
12-09-2006, 01:41
I can't remember where things were when you headed off, but just so you know...melee things later in the game hit MUCH harder than they used to and are harder to kill, particularly untwinked, so you'll need to take the synergies into account.

Also, Leech has been nerfed pretty hard from the good old days, I can't remember the exacts, but I think it's something like 50% of specified leech in NM and 25% in Hell, add to that, they've made some critters, particularly some bosses (e.g. Hell Meph) unleechable. So get used to having to quaff some potions where you didn't used to have to.

It's not all doom and gloom, and hey, at least it is more challenging now. :)

That's really not a bad idea.... my old zookeeper used to hang my old pc..... whereas this beast of a computer could have thousands of skellies running round! :D

Or a sorc, Blizzballer or Meteorb, to run NM Meph until he stops bleeding, after which you run Hell Meph until he stops bleeding.

A much faster way to accummulate a lot of the good stuff. Skelliemancers are best suited to level 85 area runs, and those runs tend to be profitable over the long run.

Sorcs tend to be expert boss killers.

In truth I will never be twinking - so doing a lot of runs is not on the cards.... I'll only be running things for the current character's needs. All the rest gets vendored.

Characters need to be non-cookie cutter really for me to get a kick out of them! ;)

For now though, I am going to make a SC character to beat the game with so I can unlock HC! Methinks I will use a wolf druid as I always used to enjoy them. Then I can start on absurd variants for HC play :D

You don't need to complete SC to make a HC character, just download ATMA and make one through there

Welcome back to the forum btw

ARGH!

I wish I had checked the forum before starting..... now I have a level 20 WW in softcore..... it's going pretty smoothly though so I might just run along with him and get to see the game before choosing my first HC character. I have to say, I am loving playing this game - it's a real blast realising all the things you've forgotten. Playing a WW came back to me immediately though and with Players 8 on, I can say that I havent even come near to being in danger yet. I think Duriel will be my first challenge.

Thanks for the idea though :) and the welcome back!

I want to mate.... but I think it only fair that I do so totally legitimately! :)

Once Hopper beats the game, I will be back onto HC with a vengeance!

Level 20 and no deaths, so I think it must be coming back! ;)

Hey there lone_wolf.... good to see you again! :) Yes, I dunno... come back home after 4 years and they go and tie me up in the broom cupboard! Pffff

You mean "join date"? If so, mine were wrong anyway - I lost mine about 3 times on this forum I think! :D I believe I first registered here in 2000... but under a different name for a few months. Then after a crash someone took the other name so I fell back on my email address... and it kind of stuck ever after! :)

erics..... I was just being coy! ;)

Cheers Toppo!.... Hmm I remember that name but if my memory serves me correctly.... not from the SP but another subforum? Hmmmm *ponders*.... no, can't think! :D

Heh, I see what you mean, although Speary and I go so far back I'm sure he's not impugning my integrity. :)

Besides, he knows I still have photos from his place...Speary, Darkness, Mavis_Cruet, Waimea, AngelOfBoom, all of you...be afraid...be very afraid! :)

Hey Baranor!

Damnit, that's a blast from the past!! :)

I think I knew you from the Druid forum from before the creation of the SP forum?? It was a long time ago whatever!

I remember many a good druidic chat in the past.... I think you were one of the few to actually have any faith in my MeleeElementalist :D

And you are still playing after all this time.... Diablo 2 is 1 in a million, after all these years so many people are still here. I can't believe how much fun I have had playing it these last few weeks - I dont play it anywhere near as much as I used to, but it is still captivating enough for those shorter stints!

Anyway, really good to see you and hope to chat with you some more! :)

I'm sorry, but that command does not work in this forum. Other commands that don't work:

/quit
/leave
/find zod
/slap mods
/spell correctly
/read stickies

Hope this helps :wink3:

You mean that ramble is always set to on?

That's fantastic!

Pull up a chair and let me begin...

See it all started with a filly named Mary and a large bag of sand. They were the heady, halcyon days of 1920's springtime. The days were short and sharp like a broken spoon. We would walk among the cherry trees - you know those cherries - the ones without stones in.... really good for the skin, well she had great skin, let me tell you! There was this guy once who couldn't believe how good her skin was and she told him about the cherries. So there we all were with the cherries and the broken spoon....

are you sure I can't turn ramble off? It's beginning to make horrible horrible sense!!!

*grabs a pop, bag of popcorn, and a comfy chair*

It should probably bother me that I understood that, but it's Friday so the brain is already turned off...

.... when a car crashed into a tree. Nowadays you might not appreciate the significance of that, you young whippersnappers - dont know your born these days.... let me tell you - when I were a lad, I would get up before I went to sleep and do 9 days a week down the coal pit in the rain, the freezing torrid rain of primordial acid!!! Cars back then, in those halcyon days were precious, unique rarities you see... they weren't strewn casually all over the roads like passion dropped clothes trailing their way from the front door to the bedroom.... oh no.... they were a sight to see. Often times people would pop out for a daytrip - take the whole family, the neighbours kids, the slaves and farm serfs and go out JUST on the slightest off-chance that they might see a car! Of course, the serfs would be whipped later for shirking their work and sometimes whole families would starve because the whip-maimed-serfs couldnt work hard enough to feed them... but that's a by-the-by. So this car.... a really nice old model... a Fordulam Ferrarium - they had proper names in those days... Latin like.... not these neo-post-modernist lefty coffee-drinking names of today like your "nova" or your "duo".... who really wants a car with less than 4 syllables?? You gets what you pays for and thats a fact. This proper old vintage classic car with a multi-syllabic name crashed right into that tree that day... right in front of our very noses... except Mary as she was facing the other way, and exploded in a ball of flames.....

*desperately searches the stickies for the /ramble off button*
