socketing items

on the arreat summit it says to use a pameth/ral/amn to socket normal weapons. I tried it on an eth cryptic axe and it didnt work. Is that because the cryptic axe is an elite item? But ive also done the tal/thul/ptopaz to socket etheral elite armous and it has worked, so whats wrong?

Is the weapon superior? You can't use the formula on superior items.

The socket recipe will work if the item is elite, so that doesn't matter.

Is the item that you are trying to socket superior?

You can still have Larzuk socket it, but he'll give it 5 sockets. Still good for Doom or Obedience.
