View Full Version : Creating a Summon druid.

I have never gone through the game with no aid, and Ive decided that this will be the build that does it.

I have read the guide here and the guide in the compendium, but I still have a few questions and I want a few opinions from people who have made a summon druid. What I want to do is progress through Hell with no outside help, directly anyways. This means no twinking from other chars, no rushes, etc. I do kinda wanna trade with items I find. I mean, not being able to trade... I may as well shoot myself in the foot and call it a day.

First, I was a bit hesitant in putting 20 skills in Spirit Wolf. I understand that AR could be necessary for Hell, but perhaps it would be better for me to get an AR merc so I could save some points for other secondary skills? Or what merc do you guys recommend? Does might stack with HoW? Does Defiance stack with the bonus from spirit wolf? Also, I believe, way back in the day, if you gave an A1 merc some +skill items, she shot actual elemental attacks. Now Im pretty certain this is true, I just dont know if it was a bug thats been fixed, or if it no longer works. If so, does anyone use it today? Is it a decent alternative to the A2 merc?

Secondly, PIs are a problem, obviously. Most people cannot get around them unless they give their merc some decent elemental attack polearm, correct? Well, obviously, the odds of me getting something like this are fairly slim. So I was thinking of saving some points from vine (maybe only going 10 in psn vine) and saving 15 from Spirit Wolves (unless its necessary) and going even further in a build.

Looking at secondary specs, I had a few in mind.

First is Fissure,Volcano and some in Firestorm. I leveled a Fireclaw druid and I found Fissure to be most helpful. Granted, Im only level 60 (just got my account back in order, I havent been playing all but 2 weeks). Since Fissure is most helpful, I was tossing around the idea of leveling up Firestorm to help it out more. I may pass for this. My main concern is that Im making an Elemental first, Summoning second character, and that may be kinda lame. I know Id be spamming Fissure a ton, and if so, I may as well be going for Elemental, right?

Second tree I was looking at was Shapeshifting. Ive never made a shape shifter outside of Fireclaws, so Im a bit daft as to what is effective and what isnt. One thing Id like about Shapeshifting is that it seems like I can be more flexible than Elemental, in terms of play style. With elemental, Id just be throwing fissure every time it stops cooling down and if my pets help kill, so be it. But with Shapeshifting, I can strum away with my bow (this is how I always invisioned my Summoner, and it seems to be most fun) and occasionally shift to help out my guys in the front whenever I see fit.
My only problem with Shapeshifting is I just dont know what skills to get. I was thinking rabies because it just seems to compliment with the summoning tree (and I could max psn vines), and its an element attack, but I just dont know.

Third, I was thinking I could max the 2 wind skills. Ive never made a windy, but it might be fun. I could see myself using a bow with my whirlwind or whatever (the one with knockback) , so thats always a plus.

I know this is a mess of thoughts, but thanks to those that read it, and kudos if it all makes sense to you.

Basically, I want a summon druid thta can go through hell solo, with no help except for trades that I can make with items myself. Ideally Id use a bow, but its not a necessity. Id rather make it through hell first than be tied to using a bow, but whatever.

Any suggestions, comments?

Has anyone tried rabies by its lonesome? Is it a waste of time if I dont have other SS skills to back it up, or level up other skills to back it up that is?

I was thinking of applying rabies and then going back to druid form to attack stuff with my bow. I dunno, seems more fun than spamming Fissure. But if its really ineffective, I guess Id rather use an elemental attack.

Anyone have experience with this?

I am building a PvM elementalist/summoner (lvl 65) so far. Read my comments in the following link.

http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=484275

basically, I max 5 skills
- fissure
- volcano
- HoW
- grizz
- firestorm

Since you are doing a near-untwinked version (you can trade what you find), I think you can get a decent summoner going.

If you are going for a bow, consider a harmony bow. it'll beef up your summons with a valk and some revives. And extra fast run/walk will make them intercept enemies that much better. Plus the huge elem damage from the bow will allow u to kill everything.

you mentioned maxing spirit wolves for the AR and def. What is your plan on which animal to use during game play? If a grizz, loading up dire wolves makes an insane meatshield. I had a fury wolf before and the grizz has huge life (5 pts spirit wolf, 15 dire wolf, 15 grizz).

Yeah, PI will always be a problem for a summoner. So the only solution is either from you or from the merc. (I wouldnt consider the posion creeper a solution). So for you, either go for fire skill or rely on a weapon solution.

I like your fireclaw approach, it can be boring shooting off fissures.

For merc, since you will be animal based, an act2 merc will be more useful as the aura will enhance your whole party and not just the merc. If you are not doing wereform, act 2 merc will become the true killing force in the group.
