to be clear. you have a normal leg, and are trying to make cows in a normal game?

Good to be clear.
I've heard lots of rumors over the years about cows... are there any cow mini-guides that sets the record straight?
Like: If an entire party is killing and someone kills the king in the party, does everyone get the quest?
How about a rush mini-guide as well? References anyone? (I'll begin searching after this post)

Answered today in this thread:

To summarize, if the Cow King is killed by someone FOR THE FIRST TIME, then everyone in that game loses the ability to make cow portals in that difficulty.
Whether you knew it or not, this must have happened to you.
Sorry!

I had the same problem in hell mode. I guess I know why now.

By tome, you mean Tome of Town Portal?

An easy workaround on the realms is to make a cow game with another character, then exit and rejoin with that character who's killed the king before. He can clear the cow level without any effect on the char that made the game... or anyone else that might happen to be in the game.

I believe its only those ppl who are in the cow level at that time, partied or not. So anyone who departies is showing themselves to be a noob. That was like effective in version 1.03 or so.
Basically, u should always party anyone who enters a cow game so u can see what they are doing on the screen. Unfortunately, the cow portal lets in strangers, many of whom just want to kill the king and get his loot. If u see someone near the cow king corral, then insist on that person communicating with the rest of the group as to what he is doing, if he is killing King then ask if he has killed before with that particular char in that particular difficulty. These ppl are notorius for not wanting to answer ur questions and taking their sweet time if they do. Unfortunately, knowing where the King is, whether he is under attack, and the King quest status of the attacker is almost impossible! Not only that, u cant hostile and attack in the cow level.
This would be mostly alleviated if your Quest Log popped open at this time! Saying something like: "Kill the Cow King" or "Kill the Cow King if you Dare". Why Blizzard makes it such a mystery is odd. They have made more major alterations on this level than anywhere else in the game, and it sure is confusing.
I may be wrong but I also believe if a person has not killed diablo in that level he can also kill. Meaning if a person is making a game and you are lvling a char that is out of norm he can still kill king. I did this while lvling my WW barb, but I guess there could have been other circumstances?

Yep, I have a char that starts the game buys tome, tele's to trist for leg, tps home (using the newly purchased tome), creates cows (in a corner), then exits. Before I exit, there's usualy a crowd gathering around the stash asking all of the cow questions.
Sometimes I can make it back in with the char I want to run cows with, and sometimes not. You gotta put it in a corner when you do this, because people usually don't run around looking for it (they just stand around). That way, they don't run off without you (especially if you're coming back with a char to mf the king).

Yes this is true if you havent kill diablo on that difficulty you are not able to get the quest kill so feel free to kill the king if this is true. I do this alot when leveling new characters with ravenclaw and enchant make sure i havent killed diablo on normal raid normal games until about 27-28 then move to nm and do the same until lv 50 or so.

I also answered in the thread SirDoofus linked to. Feel free to add to my answer.
kamikazy asked the very same question in that other thread.

One reason that comes to mind is that originally it was a Secret Cow Level. Even though they chose to set it up as a quest, the quest status is completely hidden (secret).

I think u are right about this. There have been several exhaustive posts at the community forum about the King. Time to do a search. I just stay away from the king, except to lead him back to his corral or to an obscure corner somewhere, out of the way.
Secret cow king quest: once u are down in the cow level, its no secret anymore! The cow level is popular, became too popular in 1.08-1.09, and is an area i usually avoid cuz of fear of killing the king, and only that reason, and thats dumb.
