Just picked up a 4 socket Boneweave with 415 defense. Would it be a waste to put 4 perfect topaz in it to act as MF gear or should I save it for a Merc runeword?

Hmm, it's a good idea to put 4 topaz in it but if i had it, i'd make make coh (Dol Um Ber Ist)

why not put 4 topaz in it (perfect topaz) and if you got enough welt, unsocked (hel rune+tpscroll) it and make COH.

i used 4 x p topazed armor before i got better stuff. and i u want to make COH example, u will be able to get better armor for it. something like 15% ed or that. (Muuuch easier to sell if it have 15% ed)

It wouldn't be a waste since perfect Topazes are easy to get. If you change your mind later, just unsocket it and stick something else in there.

I'm pretty sure once you start killing a lot of monsters (while mfing), you'll come across a better armor; one with lower requirements, and higher defense.

I wouldn't make some really good runeword like Coh or Fortitude in it, because it has some really high strength req's and is not superior, and so the defense will be pretty low. Trust me, people will pay a lot more for a runeword made in a superior item.

Topazes are good to stick in armors like this.

How do you unsocket something?Hel + TP scroll + socketed item + transmute = removes and destroys whatever was in the sockets.

I concur, P-Topaz's wouldn't be a waste, even if you find better armour later on you could use it on your Merc or hand it down to one of your "up and coming" characters.

It's one thing some newer players miss, socketing items with cheap gems/jewels/runes is a good thing! If it helps you out when you are lower level, go for it. You WILL LOOSE these gems/jewels/runes if you "un-socket, but if they are low level they are easy to replace. I actually use a few items to help my early characters along and keep them in the "tweaking" inventory.
