So I join a Norm Cows game - one of the great games where everyone stands around mooing "Moooo can make?", "Mooo has leg?", etc. I just go off MFing like usual and hit trav.

After blizzing the trav guys, a kalim's flail dropped (so somebody needed the quest) AND A F'IN HORADRIC CUBE DROPPED!

I'm dumbfounded.. like, holy shiz, did I really just see a cube drop on the steps by the orb? I guess I'd classify this as a unique quest item drop bug or something but it was the wierdest thing. (I bet there were 2 noobs in my party, one who didn't have a cube and one who needed the trav quest)

Not really a useful bug, but something to make me stop and just stare.

This is true, never do the cube quest if your being rushed as you will get one when you complete the travi quest (you can borrow a cube from someone else to transmute the staff in act 2)

I heard, on very laggy and rare occasions, you can find a Horadric Scroll thing next to Radament

I edited my post after re-reading the thread. Let's not get tough on the guy for not knowing something about the game. That's what these forums are for.

I just knew at this point what was coming. Whats even funnier is when the "4512 Soj's sold to Merchants" ,msg pops up. About half the time there is someone in the group who gets outraged at that message, LOL. Even funnier when the dclone comes out and we all go trompassing out to Stoney...

Well when i came back to D2 after i gave up in 1.09 the first time i saw cubes dropping in tavi i thought hmm... that's strange but i suppose with age you think before you go posting on a webby that you just found something new and interesting, or even a bug that no one has seen before.

There is a nice feature about the Horadric Cube drop in Travicanal that you can use to stock up cubes for your lvl 1 mules. You can use a character who can kill the normal council but hasn't completed the normal Compelling Orb quest. Say you have such a character, Bob, and 100 mules, M1 through M100. This is the method:

1) Bob creates a private game, goes to Act 1, drops his cube in town
2) Bob goes to Trav, kills council, picks up the new cube that drops.
3) If has been about 5 minutes, Bob leaves the game. If not, Bob MFs a bit (it would have to be somewhere before Act 3 Trav, of course) or goes and gets a sandwich to make it 5 minutes and then leaves the game.
4) Mule M1 joins the game and picks up a cube in the Rogue Encampment.
5) Go to #1 except next use mule M2, M3, ...

There are several nice things about this method:

1) It is much easier to get to Trav than to find the stairs and get the cube from the third level with the halls of the dead.
2) If you leave the game too soon and lose the cube, no big deal, Bob still has one.
3) Normal Trav is not a bad place to find Angelic rings and occasionally the amulet if Bob has big MF.
4) You can do it alone with a single computer.
5) There is a point where there is decent experience for Bob (levels 15-22 or so, IIRC) from killing the council.

If you have two computers, then of course the 5 minutes per run problem goes away and you can get two cubes per run. Or 3 per run if you have 3 computers, and so on. Or if you want to raid public normal games with many lvl 1 characters (such as those "perm mule" games) you can get cubes in bunches and then ferry them to Act 1 and leave them there, but I prefer this method using two computers as quick. The whole idea of "cube runs" is pretty silly, but given how small the stash area is, the cubes help your mules and I don't know of a better way of getting a bunch of cubes.

After step 2, bob completes the council quest and doesn't get cubes in the next games.

You could just raid "act 1" games, there are usually people there that do not have the cube, so you kill the council there, cubes drop and you can hide them near the rogue for your mules. Offcourse since you can only have 1 cube at a time in your current char's possesion, hide your own cube first, then pick up the next, hide that one, pick up the next, ect.
This would be annoying for people who intend to go all trough the acts in that game, but most people just go to a new game after a few acts.

Actually, no, if Bob hasn't actually smashed the orb and is not at that moment in possesion of a Horadric cube, it will drop, along with a Khalim's Flail. Whether or not Bob has collected any other body parts doesn't matter. He can (and will) have the "kill the council" quest (called "The Blackened Temple") without having the "smash the orb" quest, called "Khalim's Will". I've done this many times for sorting out cubes for mules and it works. Give it a try if you aren't sure. If you take the Durrance WP and kill Meph to move on to Act 4, you can get the orb quest without actually smashing it, in which case this method would not work. But if you intentionally don't smash the orb and don't go into the Durrance, then you can farm Horadric cubes this way indefinitely. You won't advance in the game, though. So sometimes I've done it along the way, killing the council a few extra times before smashing the orb and thus getting a few extra cubes for mules, and at least once each ladder season I've had a character seriously farm the council for cubes for mules. Most recently I had a Tesladin wearing full Angelics and MF gear and he collected a decent number of Angelic ammys and rings as he provided many cubes for mules. I am kind of on the packrat side, so I have a lot of mules.

Doing it yourself this way in Trav is more polite than raiding other people's games and potentially doing their quests in advance, blocking them out for them. But, as you say, on public b.net, raiding happens often enough that people just make a new game and carry on.
