One of them has been ascertained to be a Finnish navy captain.

We have a saying "rapatessa roiskuu" or "when you paint, you get splattered", which in the context can be translated "war is hell" - people die when it's war. Regardless, the captain in question had time to radio in 6 separate pleas to cease bombardment. They as far as we know received. The Finnish UNIFIL Lt Colonel didn't buy it was accidental. I don't either. We've heard that neither Mossad or Israeli military intelligence ever fails in location many times on this forum already.

I've been trying to remain impartial, but don't expect me to remain so in future. The funny thing is the Hezbollah considers Finland that now has the chairmanship of EU to be on Israeli side.

And why wouldn't we be since our friends in so friendly a manner welcome our support. Foreign minister Tuomioja mentioned that the aim of talks is to end war - to which our prime minister answered that "that's only foreign ministers view". Whattahell? Is the aim of the talks to keep the war going? Then why bother talking since we're already there? This happened after the blowing to bits of our military's representative had been confirmed. We don't give a horse's posterior about innocent foreign people, ****, not of even our own people, and we're proud of it!

The words of a Canadian United Nations observer written just days before he was killed in an Israeli bombing of a UN post in Lebanon are evidence Hezbollah was using the post as a "shield" to fire rockets into Israel, says a former UN commander in Bosnia.

Those words, written in an e-mail dated just nine days ago, offer a possible explanation as to why the post -- which according to UN officials was clearly marked and known to Israeli forces -- was hit by Israel on Tuesday night, said retired Maj.-Gen. Lewis MacKenzie yesterday.

The strike hit the UN observation post in the southern Lebanese village of El Khiam, killing Canadian Maj. Paeta Hess-von Kruedener and three others serving as unarmed UN military observers in the area.

Just last week, Maj. Hess-von Kruedener wrote an e-mail about his experiences after nine months in the area, words Maj.-Gen. MacKenzie said are an obvious allusion to Hezbollah tactics.

"What I can tell you is this," he wrote in an e-mail to CTV dated July 18. "We have on a daily basis had numerous occasions where our position has come under direct or indirect fire from both (Israeli) artillery and aerial bombing.

"The closest artillery has landed within 2 meters (sic) of our position and the closest 1000 lb aerial bomb has landed 100 meters (sic) from our patrol base. This has not been deliberate targeting, but rather due to tactical necessity."

Those words, particularly the last sentence, are not-so-veiled language indicating Israeli strikes were aimed at Hezbollah targets near the post, said Maj.-Gen. MacKenzie.

"What that means is, in plain English, 'We've got Hezbollah fighters running around in our positions, taking our positions here and then using us for shields and then engaging the (Israeli Defence Forces)," he said.

That would mean Hezbollah was purposely setting up near the UN post, he added. It's a tactic Maj.-Gen. MacKenzie, who was the first UN commander in Sarajevo during the Bosnia civil war, said he's seen in past international missions: Aside from UN posts, fighters would set up near hospitals, mosques and orphanages.

A Canadian Forces infantry officer with the Edmonton-based Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the only Canadian serving as a UN military observer in Lebanon, Maj. Hess-von Kruedener was no stranger to fighting nearby.

The UN post, he wrote in the e-mail, afforded a view of the "Hezbollah static positions in and around our patrol Base."

"It appears that the lion's share of fighting between the IDF and Hezbollah has taken place in our area," he wrote, noting later it was too dangerous to venture out on patrols.

Setting aside all else for a moment...

Why didn't the IDF tell the UN observers to evacuate if they were intent on continuing bombing Hezbollah fighters at or near that position?

EDIT: And why did the IDF call the whole thing a bungle instead of explaining about the Hezbollah fighters?

It's a war zone. Your unarmed. Bombs keep falling all around you. Don't you think you might want to bug out for a while? Set up shop a few blocks over? Don't they teach basic self-preservation in boot camp anymore?

It's a war zone. Your unarmed. Bombs keep falling all around you. Don't you think you might want to bug out for a while? Set up shop a few blocks over? Don't they teach basic self-preservation in boot camp anymore?

So instead of calling up the IDF to tell them they were bombing a UN outpost the observers should have disobeyed their orders by leaving the relative safety of their bunker to travel, by foot, several kilometers through a warzone to get to safety. Who taught you about self-preservation Smeg?

That sort of defeats the purpose of the neutral observer. I suggest you read up on that concept and the reason we came up with it.

Seriously, the more this kind of stuff happens the more I start to consider dropping my usual opposition to this kind of thing and supporting the idea of dissolving the state of Israel and forcibly deporting the lot of them. They're absolutely determined to make the Middle East an incredible bloody ****storm and I'm sick to death of their self-righteous posturing.

Call me naïve, but I don't think they all deserve it. At least I know my countryman didn't. And whatever might be said about the Lebanese, I still think it's vile and disgusting that our prime minister has to slither to seem neutral. "It's only foreign minister Tuomioja's position that the talks are to end the war in the area." How much weaker and more spineless does it get?

So the targeting wasn't deliberate? That means they were just spraying away and that's a tactical necessity. Well yeah, maybe they do have spare bombs that they just HAVE to get rid of.

Your articles takes one e-mail as solid evidence that there were Hezbollah forces around and that IDF wasn't just being spiteful. That's weak. I need more evidence for blowing up my countrymen. I'm not sure if you grasp the term esprit de corps, since it's those Frenchy Frenchymen who left the word in the thesaurae, but the fact that he is an enlisted officer of my country's defense forces doesn't make me feel good about it.

Please tell me what Hezbollah installation was so important to **** up that six separate pleas to cease fire since you're hitting us doesn't deter them. The Israeli were in radio contact the whole time. Were they laughing it up while they were dropping the bombs? At least I hope they had fun. I am not having any at the moment.
