Item levels, gambling, and suffixes, oh my!

i've been gambling w/ my lvl 82 barb for a +3 skill tree ammy w/ a good 2nd mod. i've seen lots of +3 ammys but none with even a halfway decent suffix. i can gamble items up to +4 of my character level (ilevel = 86). decent suffixes like squid, whale, performance, etc. are level 81 and below (according to arreat summit). my question is: how does the combination of a high level prefix and a high level suffix affect the level of the item i'm looking for?

bottom line: can i gamble the item i'm looking for at my current level?

Yes, you can.

The chances of getting a particular prefix and a particular suffix work separately from one another. The reason that you are having trouble getting a nice pairing is not because it can't happen, but rather because there are so many other affix choices available at such a high level.

In short, stick to it and probability should eventually work in your favor. Unless you're like me, in that you warp random events to almost always go against you. Not much you can do if that's the case >_>.

Realize that your chance for success depends heavily on what you mean by "halfway decent".

Also, if you are looking for a specific skill tree, you are really cutting your chances. I'd recommend thinking ahead at any other build who might want a +3 skill tree amulet and save those too. Here's a short list:

+3 Traps
+3 Passive/Magic
+3 Javalin
+3 Cold, Fire or Electricity (any Sorc amulet)
+3 Summoning (Druid or Necro)
+3 Combat Skills (Paladin)
+3 Warcrys

These are about the only of the +3's that I would prefer to a +2 all skills in a specific situation. More often than not, a +2 all skills amulet will beat a +3 to a single skill tree.

They certainly do exist, note that I have spent ~90 million gold gambling amulets, I've picked up and cubed just about every magical ring and amulet for the past month;

ive gambled probably 40-50 million and i get plenty of +3 skill tree ammys, but nearly all of them are plain or with some crappy level 5 mod (i just threw a number out there). so i was just making sure that i wasn't wasting all of my gold. thanks for the clarification.
edit: btw, i'm specifically looking for +warcry and +def. auras but i save any halfway decent ammys that i gamble.

I gambled this one when I was LvL 68 with my necro. If you want it, i am sure we can work something out. Assuming you are vanilla still.

sorry, i'm rwm tainted and I mispoke earlier. i meant to say that i'm looking for +3 def. aura ammys. i'm looking more for rare +2 warcries with resists than +3 magic ones. i know they're not easy to find, but that's why i enjoy gambling--and i'm a packrat who picks up almost everything to sell.:grin:
