Hi, all -
I am almost ready ( need to find 1 more amn to make a sol-I have the other 3 runes) to plant my 4 runes in a polearm so I can finally have my insight merc :jig: . Is there a special polearm I need? There are many kinds and I just want to be sure I find or gamble or buy the right one.
Thanks for any help.

You won't be able to gamble for a polearm to put a runeword in. You'll need to find a grey polearm, with 4 empty sockets. It'll need to have exactly 4, otherwise the runeword will not be created.

As for the type of polearm, well that would depend on what you're ultimately aiming for, so I'll let someone else field that question :wink3:

Insight only works in polearms, not in spears, so don't confuse the two. Example: pike = spear class, scythe = polearm class.

Don't wait too long for the perfect polearm. The runes are easy to obtain. If you find a better polearm later, you can still make another one.

You might also not know that ethereal items don't lose durability if used by a mercenary, so if the weapon is for a merc, try to get an ethereal one. But as I said, don't invest too much time into it.

And staves :P (But your merc can't use a stave; still good to know, though)

I'd get a low req one (Halberd?) if I were you; that way, you can use it later on a leveling character or a lower-level mercenary.

and you might want to keep the amn-runes for spirits and just wait for a sol to drop. also keep an eye open for white polearms, that can have 4 sockets when using the larzuk quest.

you didn't mention how far you have advanced in the game, so if you can, you should run nm-countess for runes and you will eventually get a polearm on the way.

I have made it to act II NM so far but have not done Larzuk's reward from Normal yet. Actually, I haven't done Charsi's imbue reward for Normal or NM either.
I'm on my way to countess right now.
Thank you all for your help!:flowers:

It really depends on what you want and how "strong" your merc is. A "Voluge" is probably the most common you'll find bt the damage won't be too high. If all you want is the mana regen, then damage doesn't matter.

Remember you're gambling on what level insight you're gonna get. I have a level 12 insight on a colossus voluge sitting on a mule. High damage, but not high enough insight to make me happy.

Be patient. Keep looking. Or better yet, STOP looking! When you don't need the silly thing it drops all over the place! LOL

Edit: Don't worry, realised you were talking about the level of the meditation aura, not the level req of the insight.

Are there 4 socketed polearms out there in NM or do I have to go to Larzuk or do I have to wait 'til Hell? And, if I do have to see Larzuk, how will I know what polearm to give him to be assured of 4 sockets?:undecided:

It certainly is possible to find 4 socketted items on NM difficulty. Check out http://www.diabloii.net/items/sockets-list.shtml for the item level requirements for each polearm to have 4 sockets. The item level of an item is the same as the monster level of the monster that dropped it.

On NM and Hell, almost all monsters get their monster level from the area level. What this basically means is that if you check out http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=218836, post 6, you'll be able to determine the level of the monster that drops a polearm, and therefore the ilvl of the item to determine whether it'll be able to get 4 sockets from Larzuk.

For example, if a normal voulge were to drop in the Stony Fields, Act 1, Nightmare difficulty, it would have an ilvl of 37. According to the above linked website, any voulge with an ilvl of 25 or greater will be able to get 4 sockets.

Another example would be: If a normal Poleaxe dropped in the Lost City, Act 2, Nightmare difficulty, it would have an ilvl of 46. According to the above website, any Poleaxe with an ilvl of 40 or greater would get 5 sockets if socketted with Larzuk, so this wouldn't be usable in your case. If, however, the Poleaxe had dropped in the Stony Field, it would have an ilvl of 37 (same as the above example), and would therefore be capable of getting 4 sockets from Larzuk.

Finally, it's also possible that these items could drop with 4 sockets naturally.

Orphan, you are amazing!
Thanks so much for all of that information. I don't know much about ilevels and clevels but you certainly know your stuff here.
... and now, I feel like I know a bit more.
