A lot of items have this quality but even uniques has the max (takes) damage of 20 or so. Is the damage taken multiplied according to some sort of equation? Even in NM, attacker takes damage of 5 means nothing, in Hell it's like attacking with an axe damaging 8-14. Enlighten me on this please.

It would only really be modified by the resistances of the defender. In any event, the modifiers "attacker takes damage of xx" and "attacker takes magical/lightning/etc damage of xx" are about as useless as you think.

It's exactly what it sounds like. When monsters attack you, the receive xx damage, which may be further reduced by monsters' physical resistances and whatnot. Of course, you can cast Amp or Decrep to get a little bit more damage out of it. :azn:
And there's no secret multiplier that increases the damage returned. What you see is what you get, so you're right, this mod is absolutely useless past Act 2 Normal.

Edit-Orphan, type slower plz. :badteeth:

I always thought that attackers take damage of xx means that monsters take, let's say 20 times damage it has hit  like if monster hits 12 its 12 x 20 damage back

What about "magic damage reduced by 2" etc... Is that also as useless as it sounds?

It's a much-useless modifier, but it does make clearing a low-level area easier sometimes, especially if you start out with a low-level character with a few items with that modifier.

its not as useless as attacker takes X, because PCs generally have less health than mobs. Still, 2 damage prevention is pretty poor.

I like using the Razor Tail Sharkskin Belt. It has the "attacker takes damage of xx where xx = clvl"

So when I put it on my level 85 Necromancer, I feel good walking around act 1 normal areas and monsters just fall without me doing anything. That's about the only use I have it for...to make myself feel better.

A1 norm monsters can hit a level 85 necro?

Magic damage reduced is a lot more useful.

The vast majority of monsters deal less than 100 damage per hit, so taking off a couple is quite useful.

phys damage reduced is even better, cause it blocks magic damage too, if there isn't enoug physical for it to block

I always assumed that the attacker doesn't actually have to hit you...cuz monsters drop left and right with me just walking around...

Nope. As far as I know, they still need to actually land a hit in order for the damage to be returned.

MDR and number DR are very useful. Especially in PVP.

Maybe the ones who attack with magic drop.

Elemental attacks do not trigger that modifier, IIRC.

Well then, all i can think of is that he misremembers, because i also did that for fun a while ago and they drop when they attack you, they don't drop while they are walking on the other side of the screen.

(My character wasnt as high as level 85, so they could hit me once in a while.)
