There is an interesting post in the battle.net forums:

Reports of latency related issues on USEast and Europe have been noted and we have forwarded the information to our network team to investigate. I assure you we will have this resolved as soon as possible. If I receive any new information about this I will be sure to update you all.

Maybe the gmerc bug will be fixed at last?!

I haven't actually used the gmerc bug myself, does it really cause all that lag? I have a few friends who do, and they don't complain about it lagging the game at all.

My hypothesis is that it has more to do with people duping. I mean hell, I've even seen ads up at the top of THIS VERY FORUM advertising dupe programs (which I suspect are spam/scams anyway, but I suppose it'd be easy enough to package a bot like that), as well as on my text-based roleplaying forums. I know Elly's killed the ads here, but that's not the point. Duping has become more widespread, and before much longer, the already-messed-up economy is going to come crashing down around our ears, followed by the 1.1x version of Iths.

If my prediction is correct, we'll see a patch in approximately six months. Plenty of time for *everyone* to start using programs, so that Blizzard can do a huge mass-ban.

Disclaimer : These predictions are by no means supported by any source in any way, and simply the view and guesses of one very deranged forumer.

Here's a simple solution, make it so g-mercing gives you a minimum temp-ban of 72 hours. If you can get it from cycling through auras too fast or clicking on too many profiles I don't see why this couldn't be done.
