I have read both that you can put a Rune Word in an item that has more sockets than you need, and at the same time I have seen discussion over how to remove excess sockets. If excess sockets don't stop your RW from working, why remove them ?

You can only make runewords in items with the correct number of sockets.


The only recipe that removes anything is the 'item + Hel rune + scroll of TP' recipe, which removes (and destroys) anything that is in the socket(s).

You cannot remove the sockets themselves. You can only remove the gems/runes/jewels socketed into the item.

Indeed, you cannot remove any open sockets on an item. The only thing you can do is reduce the number of sockets an item will receive when socketed (e.g., by Larzuk)
