looking for a helpful link as to how to do this properly and also also links for patches.

Click on the Battle.net button, and it should automatically download the latest patch for you. Or you can do it manually by downloading the patch here http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0387p and placing it in your Diablo II program folder.
