Infinity?

So I started playing on friday, got lvl 79 now, and got alot of stuff free ( like tal armor, tal amu, shako, magefist gauntlets and more) but i find my meteorb build is boring and no dmg at all :(
So im thinking about making a single tree lightning sorc, but according to everyone they aren't good without a merc with something called infinity. What exactly is infinity? ;)

Oh and then yester day I dueled a blizz sorc, got completely wasted (sure he had better items but...) He must've done sick dmg, still my meteors didn't even touch his hp, why?

The reason his hp didnt move much is probably that he:
1. Had good fireresists, maybe even higher than 75%.
2. Had a good and synergized energy shield, meaning that (if worst possible case) 95% of your damage was absorbed by his mana instead, and he might have had lots of mana. Think about it, first remove 75% of your damage, then remove 95% of the rest. Hp might seem non-moving then...

And infinity is a runeword, which grants conviction aura, which can break immunities. Please observe that it can be made on ladder only.

Should I make a lightning or a blizz? Leaning towards blizz, tho i got a rainbow facet jewel with +4 lightning dmg.
