What does cold absorb do?
I'm going to explain this with an example:
you have 50 (straight) cold absorb
(for the record, you have 75% all resistances)
a monster hits you with 1000 cold damage
first the resistances trigger, leaving 250 cold damage heading your way
then the 50 cold absorb triggers, stopping 50 cold damage,
leaving 200 cold damage heading your way, healing 50 life
(but you weren't hurt before so this step is skipped instead)
and 200 cold damage is removed from your life
now you took 200 cold damage, what if the next hit comes?
a monster hits you with, again, 1000 cold damage
first the resistances trigger, leaving 250 cold damage heading your way
then the 50 cold absorb triggers, stopping 50 cold damage,
leaving 200 cold damage heading your way, healing 50 life
(you were hurt, so you actually heal 50 life now)
and 200 cold damage is removed from your life
When using % absorb there is a cap at 40% (because the stopping of 40% and then healing of 40% gives you actually an extra resistance of 80%)
same example, 40% cold absorb
1000 cold damage => after resistances = 250 cold damage
40% removed, no healing => 150 cold damage to life
second hit:
1000 cold damage => after resistances = 250 cold damage
40% removed, 40% healing => 100 life gain, 150 cold damage to life
Conclusion: when facing little damage (after resistances and/or PvP penalties) use straight absorb, when facing uge damage, use % absorb
