Results from 1000 hell baal runs

I've played D2 for a long time, but never seriously got into the MF business, until I read this thread (http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=371302) few days after the ladder was reset last year. I was so inspired that I decided to do 1000 hell baal runs myself on ladder this season. I started with a meteorb sorc, played it untwinked from normal to hell, and MF'ed NM baal and hell meph thousands of times to get all the gears I need. Finally I finished the 1000 baal runs today (well, I've done 1600+ baal runs now, but the counted and recorded ones are 1000 as of today). So here is a report of what I've found, just to celebrate:smiley:.
The items/numbers listed below are only for what I got from baal, excluding anything from the other monsters. I only recorded the unique and set items, excluding any failed uniques. I use my main weapons to teleport to the throne and kill all monsters there, then switch to my alternative weapons right before I kill baal. If I somehow failed to switch weapon in a run, that run was not recorded here.
My main gears are as following:
- Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest w/ PTopaz (24MF)
- Tal Rasha's Lidless Eye w/ Ist (30MF)
- Tal Rasha's Guardianship w/ PTopaz (112MF)
- Tal Rasha's Fine-Spun Cloth (15MF)
- Tal Rasha's Adjudication (65MF with the rest set)
- Sanctuary Troll Nest (0MF)
- Chance Guards (40MF)
- Stone of Jordan x2 (0MF)
- War Traveler (49MF)
My alternative weapons for MF are:
- Oculus w/ Ist (80MF)
- Headhunter's Glory w/ 3Ist's (75MF)
My inventory:
- Gheed's Fortune (40MF)
- Small charms (48MF, the number ranged a little during the 1000 runs)
- Annihilus, Hellfire torch, and 3 Cold skillers.
As a summary, when I use alternative weapons to baal (as I did in all the runs), I have ~540MF. Each run takes about 4-7 minutes. And now the numbers:smiley::

Among the 1000 runs, 251 runs ended up with no unique/set item. Among all the unique/set items, there're 257 distinctive unique items (excluding Gheed and Facet), and 103 distinctive set items.
It's kind of disappointing that there's only 1 TC87 item in 1000 runs, although I did get Griffon's Eye, Windforce, Grisword's Valor, M'avina's True Sight, etc. from the monsters in the throne.

TC=treasure class. Generally a group of basic item types or another sub-treasure classes. Some group of items (TCs) are rarer than other, some can drop from a specific monster with higher odds than other.

For example
good TC - contains gems, charms, jewelry...
weap3 TC - contains early weapons like short sword, short bow, wand
armo87 TC - contains the rarest armors like Sacred armor, Diadem, Corona, Ogre Gauntlets

Very impressive indeed!! There seems to be a concentration around TC 21 and if u do Baal run for 100 times and u find 2-3 items of TC72-81, u shd stop. Further running is meaningless.

If sb can come up with a similar run/result record for Mephisto Run would be real nice for comparison sake. This is the first empirical record ever I read; it is much more inspirating than those theoretical arguement. Nice work again.

I'm 100% sure that I have seen a thread that included empirical data on mephi runs. Can't remember how may runs there were or where I've seen that,might be on this very forum.

Just for the record, I got 48 green breastplate from Meph in 1000 runs, only 18 from Baal. There was a 200-run period when Baal didn't drop a single one and I was really surprised (although he dropped 3 in the 10 runs afterwards:smiley:).
These are all normal (non-quest) 1-player baal runs done on USWest ladder. It took me almost 3 months I think (kind of busy with work these days). So far there are still 28 items (excluding Cow King set) I haven't found, half of them in TC87; I have found all the rest this season.

Yeah, I wrote a C# program to do the sorting/formatting. Basically, I record the result of each run in Excel, and save the file as Comma-delimited format (.csv file), then I run the program I wrote on the .csv file to produce the result.
I can send you the source code if you program in C#, but you'll need .Net framework 2.0 (from Windows Update) and Visual Studio (you can download Visual C# Express for free).

What about 1000 pit runs for the TC87 items? May be 1000 Nightmare Andariel runs for SoJ? 1000 Cow Level runs for high runes? :D

I think if you want to do another 1000 runs of something, do Pit runs to determine if they drop the high-TC items more often than baal or not.

The problem with doing pit runs, though, is that they are best done in games with 5+ people in them, and plus its difficult to be completely thorough with tham, whereass for other empirical runs you just have to record the drops of a single boss the Pit has many creatures.

Anyway, well done on all that hard work. 4-7 minutes: 5.5 mins average x 1000 = 5500 minutes / 60 = 91.6 hours. Yikes! Not to mention the time it took to tabulate data.

Yeah, I am thinking about doing 1000 pits runs now, and maybe ancient tunnels too, for two main reasons:
1) I still have 28 items not found, half of them in TC87.
2) With all the bots on ladder, I'm kind of tired of the solo-leveling now (I'm lvl96 now btw).
As for getting more people in pits runs, I'll just stick with 1 player. It's not realistic to find a friend doing 1000 runs with me, and it gets into the question of who's making the killing with how much MF (unless identical chars). I play on ladder, so "/players X" doesn't work either.

I do so when I need to enhance monsters a bit. And I play honestly: drop unneeded rare/set/unique items in Rogue Encampment to be sure that people would not leave. :D

You sure you're thinking about C# right? because it has only been invented for a couple years:smiley: and VS is the best (if not only:smiley:) editor for C# (you should thank me for not writting it in VB.net:wink3:). Anyway, you only need to write down the item names for each run, one run per line in excel with no special formatting. I've put a small TC lookup table in the code, so it will handle all the TC and qLvl stuffs.
You can download Visual C# Express for free here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/visualcsharp/), which works fine side-by-side with other Visual Studio installations. You need .Net Framework 2.0 because I used generics in code. If you're interested, I can email the source code.
