1. yes, it's too long
2. none of it is true...except perhaps the name of Jesus
3. Mary magdelon was not a prostitute (that was a different mary)
4. Jesus didn't have kids
5. Probably.
7. sure.
8. agreed
9. i'm done too.
I still have to read the book. I've actually seen the premise of the book before, it's nothing new. We have no way of knowing if Jesus had kids, it seems unlikely that the lineage would have survived 2,000 years - how many do? Even if he did and even if you think that the fact they were descended from him makes them special in some way, by now they'd only be about 1/2^60th Jesus.
I disagree about Tom Hanks being a good actor, he's had his moments (Forrest Gump for example) and certainly he has some skill but for the most part he acts exactly the same way in every movie.
I saw it friday with friends, having not read the books. It was modestly easy to follow (having some of it in captions, even if due to diff. languages being spoken, was helpful). It wasn't anything super special, but it had it's interesting moments... though wth was with those "visions" or whatever that Hanks had?
I haven't read the book either, though I do want to.

I"ll probably see it when one of the lodges plays it as a private screening. I'll be a Knight Templar by then so I'll get a good laugh out of it. Just liek I did with National Treasure.

I've heard the book is a hack job, and the rest of the guys books are even worse (belonging in the "wow this guy's stuff sells really well, let's buy all the crap manuscripts he has lying around in his den" category) so I'm not interested in it at all. Might see the movie on DVD one day.

Hah, that's because you never saw the master in his prime (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080202/).

My bad. Well, he could have a film prime and a TV prime, I guess.
The Davinci Code is more of a mental thriller than an action movie. That worked in the book's favor, but film is a visual medium. Floating-anagram techniques borrowed from the spelling-bee documentary "Spellbound" aren't heart-pumping enough in a movie where characters furrow their brows or launch into mind-numbing flights of exposition. The movie is so nervous about offending anyone that it's hardly any fun. Hanks delivers a few solemn speeches meant to deflect criticism. Meanwhile, he and Tautou (They should have looked to Sophie Marceau isntead =P) barely hit it off. At least Mr. and Mrs. Smith got hot while doing their jobs.
It's impossible to talk about what happens in this movie without giving away the big secret...just know that a murder committed in the Louvre leads code expert Langdon (Hanks - whats with the hair?) and French cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Tautou - still say they should have grabbed Marceau) on a very long, very talkative treasure hunt for an object that will help them know whether Christianity is true or not. And the effect is like watching your grandmother put together a puzzle of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for two and half hours.
Bettany as the albino monk Silas who constantly jumps out of the shadows to stab people. Then he goes home, strips, and flogs himself, which is ufficiently weird amid the solemnity. And then when Sophie drives BACKWARDS to get away from some people who would like to kill them in the name of God. She does so like a French female Steve McQueen, dodging all sorts of death on wheels. I sat there thinking, "Well, she's Amelie, so of course that makes her magic."
So the take home message...."The Da Vinci Code" plays better on the page than the big screen,,,so grab the book and get ready for some real fun...and rent the movie afterwards, better yet...borrow the movie from a friend...=P
I liked Tautou in Amelie (and I think I saw something else where she played practically the same character), dunno if she really makes sense in this kind of movie.

Absolutely - But Pat - which book did you read first out of curiosity?

I thought talking to Wilson was one of his more finer moments - or was you being satirical?

Have to wait for that as Being severely deaf I would not have the greatest of times in a cinema - but I am interested to see if 'Cunningham' really did make a hash of it as much as people say he did

Eh, I saw it over the weekend, and enjoyed it. Nothing spectacular, but enjoyable enough. Probably helps that I'd read the book.
I agree though, they should have gotten Sophie Marceau.

Even if National Treasure didn't fit well with your precious Templars, you've gotta admit it was an entertaining movie outside of any factual issues.

Da Vinci Code first, then Angels and Demons, then Deception Point, then Digital Fortress. A&D and DP were probably my favorites.
And yes, I know Da Vinci Code and A&D are pretty much the same song, different verse.

I'll admit nothing of the sort. It still holds captive an hour and a half of my life and I want it back.

Not that I think he's the best ever and I'd like to punch that retarded smug look he uses every film, but anyone who can hold the screen by themselves has talent (Cast away).

The bloodline of Queen Sheba and King Solomon lasted until Haile Selassie I died in 1974.

I've been meaning to see that. I know he's had some good performances but I tend to think that actors who simply play themselves on screen (or at least act the exact same way in every role) are overrated. Acting is supposed to involve, you know, acting.

Assuming this is true (how anyone knows what King Solomon's bloodline is I have no idea, just for one thing) that's two. I didn't say it was impossible, just highly unlikely.

I heard that that movie was criticized for spending too much time with just one person. (Tom Hanks, for good or worse, it seemed the general idea wasn't liked)
But I loved the movie and I hardly know anyone that didn't like it.

Not every role can be insanely eccentric. Somewhere along the way, you are going to need people in the movie that are, you know, people.

don't forget to cite where you got a lot of "your" review from . . . er, yeah, you know, since it's not actually yours.

I didn't read Deception Point. Rather I listened to it on CD's when driving. I didn't really like it. Odd since I liked Angels & Demons and the Code.
Begs the question: does the form we experience something affect the outcome of our enjoyment? Quick, someone make a thread!
I did read Digital Fortess and liked it.
Dan Brown is still the "shock jock" (from what I have read) of the novel world. Even stuff he says is true has been proven false. Need I mention X-33?

Ooo Amra, please explain the X33 thing, sounds like your area of expertise, more or less.
I will in time. It's getting late now.
it seems unlikely that the lineage would have survived 2,000 years - how many do?
Quite a lot really, given that everyone on earth has a bloodline that passes through people alive 2000 years ago.
Only problem is with 'royal' bloodlines where although your siblings kids are on the same bloodline as your parents they are not on the same bloodline as your kids. The bloodlines of first borns from each generation might easily die out, but the chances of a bloodline of someone who has more two kids who both have more than two kids themselves dying out seems low.

Well, I haven't really seen any hard data on this question (I'd be interested to) but bear in mind that the more wealthy people get the fewer kids they have and the more often bloodlines die out. This was true even in the ancient world, the Romans had to adopt like crazy to keep the upper classes from dying out.
Of course it is true that we all have a bloodline that stretches back to before recorded history, but how many side branches of the tree died out along the way? I'd like to know, I suspect it's quite a lot.

Don't quite know where Brown was going with digital fortress - I felt let down when I read it.
But Deception point was something else - a must for conspiracy theorists just for the govt overspend alone!
I am still awaiting news of his new book - his website mentions a sequel to DVC - Another thiller this time set in DC

Deception point is his best imo, with angels and demons a close second. I value the code low, since I'm into medieval history and the book had few secrets for me...Pity. Digital fortress is ok,nothing to write home about. Generally I read his books during long trips, to help time fly since I don't consider him an important author.
