Well, I'll answer your question in 3 ways:

There is no such thing as too much mf, but, more mf does have consequences:
1) you'll have to sacrifice gear in order to obtain loads of mf, sacrificing gear means loss of: damage, defense, resistances, life, ...

2) you'll gain more chance of an item quality improving (more mf only increases the chance of a white item to become blue/yellow/gold) but the chances of getting an unique raise far slower than the chances of getting a rare. Therefor, you'll have more chance to get more rares in the end.

eg (numbers and examples are incorrect, only logic applies here):
with standard mf:
80 %chance to get white item
15 %chance to get rare item
5% chance to get unique item
with "toomuch" mf:
50 %chance to get white item
40 %chance to get rare item
10 %chance to get unique item

The chances for both rares and uniques raise, but the rares raise faster.

3) After a certain point, the increase in actual chances to find more, is extremely low compared to the mf you have to put into it.

Iirc unique chances already have diminishing returns at 150% mf, it matters if you increase your mf, but you won't notice much of a difference.
(eg 100mf to 150mf has the same raise in actual chance as 150mf to 1000mf for uniques, again, not accurate numbers, just example for logic)
