this may be a stupid question, so sorry if it is but i would like to know?

It does remove the immunity on most monsters. Some will still be immune afterwards.

Remember, -% res (like that on conviction) works at 1/5 effectiveness against immunes.

Like Ilkori said; it will remove most of the immunities. The only time you might not remove it is when the monster normally is immune and is a unique with Lightning Enchantment (which adds 75% to their normal lightning resistance). I don't think any of the normally immune monsters on Hell has more than 100%.
