View Full Version : SOJ and Skelliemancers

Hi there, I have two questions...
1. A little bit of a n00b question, but I never really knew the answer.
Why is Stone of Jordan so rare compared to the rest of the unique rings? It's got a lower level requirement than Dwarf Star and Raven Frost, yet its rarer than both of them (or it least it seems that way due to it being valuable). Shouldn't the unique rings be rarer based on their level requirements?
2. Are Skelliemancers still viable in 1.11? I wanted to try making one (I never did) but I'm not sure if I can get through hell with one. It doesn't matter to me if a good build for skeliiemancers is moderately item-dependent though.
(If the second question is better suited to be asked in the necromancer board, let me know.)
Thanks.

1. SoJ's give plus to skills and huge mana bonuses....the only other ring that gives +skills is the BK ring, IIRC....also the SoJ's trigger the World Event to make Big D walk, therefore Annihlus charms
2. Skellymancers are even better in 1.11 as far as I'm concernded....my main character is a skellymancer and he kicks tail....there isn't a monster in the game that takes more than 30 seconds to kill ;-) (cept the Ubers)

1) correct the +skill mods are godly and only 2 rings have them, the SOJ gives a mana boost, and the BulKathos wedding band gives life.
2) Skellymancers are a good build for pvm and you can walk through the entire game with relative ease with one. Usually they are made by people who just want to sit and play the game all the way through for a new challenge or something to do, also they are just plain fun.
I know there are guides in the Necromancer forum section but i dont have time to look them up right now, i can PM them to you later, otherwise just browse the mancer forum for guides and see what u can get.

So are you saying that the mods of SOJ have a direct impact on its rarity? It seems kinda weird that it has a lower level requirement, but is really hard to find compared to the other unique rings.
As for a skelliemancer build, I think I know the general direction the build goes so I should be alright for that.

soj is also a lot rarer than raven or dwarfstar.

Here are the numbers for v1.10/1.11
Nagelring (15/59, QLVL 10)
Manald Heal (15/59, QLVL 20)
The Stone of Jordan (1/59, QLVL 39)
Dwarf Star (10/59, QLVL 53)
Raven Frost (10/59, QLVL 53)
Bul-Kathos´ Wedding Band (1/59, QLVL 66)
Carrion Wind (3/59, QLVL 68)
Nature´s Peace (3/59, QLVL 77)
Wisp Projector (1/59, QLVL 84)
The fraction in the first part of the parantheses is the rarity (for a unique ring that is so high in item level that any of the unique rings is possible). So the best chance to get a Stone is to find a unique ring with ilvl 39 to 52. Those have 1/31 chance of being a SoJ.
Why is it rare? The simple answer is: because someone decided it should be rare. :badteeth:
Part of the explanation is probably because it has been around since Classic where there were only 3 unique rings. Back then, it was the "highest".

Required level isn't everything (Unless it's runes). For instance, try finding a Harlequin Crest with a required level of 62, and then try finding a Lenymo sash with a required level of 7.

Actually, I found my second ever Lenymo some weeks ago, only found 1 shako though, IN 5-6 YEARS! Statistics play jokes on me, probably.
But as in the list above, the sojs drop more seldom than raven frosts for instance.
And the +skill/+mana bonus make them THE choice for pretty much any caster. That is why they are worth so much. Raven frosts would probably be that too, if it didnt drop 10 times more often than sojs, since raven frosts is a given choice for almost any non-caster character.

I already knew SOJ was a pretty sweet ring, but now I think understand why its rare (in terms of drop value).

and the best place to find the is on Nightmare Andariel, since the SoJ is the highest level ring she can drop. You won't stuck with the "higher level" ones off of her. And her chance to drop one is the best over any other monster in the game according to ATMA.

Does this apply to both single player and the realms?

The drop mechanics are exactly the same.
i think its so valuable cos it has +1 skills on it. the same goes for BK ring isnt it?

that is part of it. But the main reason that the SoJ is more saught after than the BK (which IMO is a better ring anyways) is because SoJ's spawn the D-Clone, and therefore lead to Annihlus Charms. (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/normal/ucharms.shtml)
