because ethereal items spawn with 20% (iirc) better stats than the normal items of that nature. Also, ethereal items are used for RW's to put on Mercs, since items don't lost durability when on a mercenary.

That makes ethereal items more sought after for "Indestructable" runewords, or just items (uniques and runewords) for Mercenaries, as they benefit from the higher defense/ damage, but the item will never break while they wear it.

Zod runes, which give the indestructable mod, have also been duped endlessly, giving more reason to value ethereal stuff even more.

Ethereal items have a 50% bonus to base damage respectively base defense and their str req is lower by 10.
