Damage vs speed?

How do I judge which is better of two weapons if, say, one has higher damage but the other one has very fast attack speed? Is there a rule of thumb?

Does attack speed simply mean how many times per second I can hit a monster? Does my dexterity contribute to that, or does it only affect my chance to hit?

These are real noob questions, I know. I get completely lost in all the tables presented on the site... :embarassed:

There is no definite answer. You need to find how how long does each hit take (in frames, where 1 frame = 0.04 seconds), then calculate how much you are doing per second on average. Then you take the one that gives most damage per second (usually). If it is the same, prefer the faster one.
