I recently started playing on West. All of my normally used characters are on East. I wanted to try to solo through the games with each character on West, joining full games solely for the experience, and not relying on parties to help kill monsters, or anything like that. I started a fireball sorc just to get some items up to make a decent hammerdin. On the armor stand to the left of where Mephisto spawns, I found a crown shield with 28 all resists. I'm sure the ilvl has something to do with whether or not the shield will get 4 sockets from Larzuk for a spirit shield.

My question is two-fold:

1) How do you find out the level of weapon/armor stands in a given area?
2) Will this particular shield yield 4 sockets from Larzuk socket quest?

EDIT: (kinda off topic) and wouldnt ya know it, right after I posted this message, went in with sorc to do a quick meph run in NM and Bremm Sparkfist was kind enough to drop me a stone of jordan...

pally shields get 4os max so larz will give any pally shield 4sockets.

Add: starting from ilvl 1, as was the answer when I asked the very same question a few days ago.

1) How do you find out the level of weapon/armor stands in a given area?

Items have ilv=mlvl of the monster who dropped it.
ilvl=alvl if it came from an object like chest...

In normal difficulty, the regular monsters have mlvl defined in monstats.txt and also it can be found at Arreat Summit. In NM and hell, mlvl=alvl.
Champions have mlvl=regular mlvl+2, random bosses and minions (as well as some superuniques) have mlvl = regular mlvl+3. Act bosses and special superuniques have their own mlvl.

alvl is area level - can be found in strategy compendium:
