Just some ideas I've had for a while. Feel free to post your own and make comments about balance issues.

Some weapon ideas to start off (with pics by me  ). I made some effort to balance them.

-Demonic Heart (Berserker Axe) http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/2484/demonicheartaxeb2aq.jpg

450% Enhanced Damage
+300-450 Fire Damage
Drain Life -75
10% Mana Stolen Per Hit
-1 to All Skills (note: cannot disable skills that only have 1 point)
-50 Life
1% Chance to Cast Level 3 Life Tap on Striking

-The Axe of Moo (Twin Axe) http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/3939/axeofmoo9id.jpg

125% Enhanced Damage
30% Increased Attack Speed
+35 Life
5% Reanimate as: Hell Bovine
100% Chance to Cast Level 3 Charged Bolt When Struck

-Archdemon's Fury (Hydra Edge) http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/535/sfurysmall2bc.jpg

375% Enhanced Damage
50% Increased Attack Speed
25% Chance of Crushing Blow
6% Chance to Cast Level 30 Fire Ball on Striking
+25% Resist Fire
+5 Fire Absorb
-50% Resist Cold
-25% Resist Lightning
-150 Life
+50 Mana
25% Faster Run/Walk

Then my character idea: Looks like some kinda of mix between the paladin and necromancer, and has skills based around sythes and daggers. He has "curse auras" that, instead of benefiting allies, weaken enemies (haven't thought of their actual effects yet though).

Some skill examples:

-Soul Feast: Very slow attack, but ignores defense & blocking and temporarily gives the character bonuses from the targeted monster if it is killed with this attack. Life bonus cannot exceed 100% of the character's base life. Must use a dagger.
Level 1: +10% of monster's damage, +5% of monster's life, 30 second duration
Level 20: +105% of monster's damage, +25% of monster's life, 360 second duration

-Scythe Mastery: Increases skills and abilities when using scythe-type weapons. (aka scythe, war scythe, and exceptional/elite versions)
Level 1: +28% enhanced damage, 30% attack rating
Level 10: Can use Scythes one-handed if character has at least 2x the strength and dexterity requirements. -20% decreased attack speed while wielding one-handed. 73% enhanced damage, 102% attack rating
Level 20: Can dual-wield Scythes, no requirement or attack speed penalty, 123% enhanced damage, 182% attack rating

-Blood Lust: More life leech, attack speed, and damage with more hits; up to 5 hits count. Effects do not transfer to other attacks.
Level 1: 1% life leech, 1% increased attack speed, 5% enhanced damage
Level 20: 10% life leech, 4% increased attack speed, 100% enhanced damage.

To be honest, I don't see any real advantage to using this weapon. Especially when someone could make the runeword 'Famine' (http://www.battle.net/diablo2exp/items/runewords-110.shtml)in a berserker axe and get pretty much the same thing, without the penalties, but with some attack speed (though it wouldn't have the life tap of course).

For an elite unique, you would probably need to give it some more appeal.

That one would be funny on a melee sorc, with ctc fireball.

Ah, I see what you mean. I tend to forget about a lot of runewords since I'm too poor to make them... What would this need for people to actually use it?

Some attack speed, and 10% life steal would help improve it quite abit. Maybe also include some -fire resistances, since the fire damage is an important damage source of this weapon.
