View Full Version : a Paladin With Character and a Question

I had an idea for a paladin build, well the basic concept and wondered if it could be made to be at all viable. I've heard of martyr builds, builds that focus on sacrifice, but I thought of making a 'martyr by name martyr by nature' character. AFAK current martyr builds will get themselves sufficient life leach and life replenish to counteract the life stolen for sacrifice. From a hack and slash point of view this is all very well but it doesn't really qualify as martyrdom. Paladins are supposed to be holy people, trusting in their god to bring them victory, being noble but not too proud and definitely not cowardly. So a martyr should entrust his life to his god and hope that his sacrifice pleases him. My idea was no life leach or life replenish. At least it should be avoided, as with PDR gear, though this may be esential because of the tomb viper bug if nothing else. Prayer would be OK because it's a godgiven skill and is only really viable between battles anyway. Redemption would likewise be OK. That would be like the paladin saying 'forgive them father for they know not what they do' and redeming their souls. (That is not meant to be in any way blasfemous and if it causes offence it was never intended). you get the idea. CTC life tap would be OK because it's left to chance, i.e. whether the paladin is worthy of his god's protection. Plus life gear would of course not only be OK but esential. The more the paladin has to sacrifice the more he can champion his god's cause but what he has he must be equally prepared to give away in a genuine sacrifice.

he could give a tithe away, leave it by a shrine once per level or five levels or whatever. Or simply once per week or per quest completed, (players choice), no gambling.

i thought of somehow encorperating thorns or iron maden into this build but I'm not sure if the concepts don't contradict each other. I really like the 'what goes around comes around' idea that thorns represents. An a1 merc with bramble armour and a bow with the edge runeword and the crescent moon amulet would be the best way of getting these but very expensive and I'm not sure if the crescent moon amulet exists in 1.11.

The problem with the thorns idea is whether you want monsters to be hitting you or not. a two-handed weapon for sacrifice would be great! That would mean you were giving up more of your life, trusting more in your god. But that may be rediculous because of the resistances you would lose and the fact that a shield is a paladin's symbol. Plus the fact that you may well need as high def and MDR as possible because of all the life you'll be losing through sacrifice. In which case Exile might be good to go for because of the defiance aura and life tap.

Facets might be a good thing to aim for too. If you die, either because of your own devotion, or because the forces of hell overwhelm you, the overwhelming vengance of your god crushes them. Infinity on an A2 merc might be good to amplify the elemental damage as you die or whatever item it is that gives you a chance to cast lower resist IIRC.

Anyway these are just my basic ideas. Please don't flame but it'd be nice to make something of this. It looks like I'm going to have to start ladder to get access to all the serverside stuff and, after the time and effort I've put into my SP paladin, that's very frustrating and disappointing so I'd like a really diverting character. Going the traditional routes would just feel like I was playing someone else's characters if that makes any sense. My GF and I are making a blizz sorc together. She's a noob and I don't know much about sorceresses so i looked for guides and started to build one. It was really dull somehow, after a while, one hit killing almost everything on players 8 because of a done-to-death cooky cutter build. Not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with traditional builds, it's just not my idea of fun right now.

Maybe my idea just wouldn't be viable. Maybe it's really easy to do, has already been done and you don't really notice the challenge, though I doubt the latter.

Now back down to earth. The question is much more mundane. How does vengance work, i.e. what physical damage does it work from? Does fanatacism help for example. Are the three elements applied together or does it work like spectral hit? Thanks very much for reading!
