Disappearing Mercenary

When ever I use a portal to go between acts or save and exit, Both my mercenary and golem leave. Can anybody hink of a reason for this? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

What patch are you playing? Are you playing Classic Diablo 2 (ie, not the Lords of Destruction expansion)?

Yes I'm playing without using the expansion. I did not realise that mercs could not be brought from one act to the other without it. First time playing without the expansion pack. Thanks for your help.

Do mercs actually DIE when they go to another act in classic?
Or just disappear?

Do they come back if you reenter the act?

They won't reappear when you re-enter the same act.

Yeah...I couldn't even complete Normal when I played Classic...I'm such a loser...my Merc always drags me through Normal after Act 1. Strange, that mercs can be so important...fun stuff.
