% Damage Taken Goes to Mana

I was wondering, does this mod actaully reduce the amount of damage you take by x%, or does it only give you x% mana back, but you still take full damage. A related question, does this mod work for mercs as well?

you still take the damage, but you get that much mana.

and mercs don't use mana, so it's irrelevant
