If you use the horadric cube recipie to socket ethereal items it "reapplies" the +50%def for being ethereal to begin with. For this reason ethereal shields and ethereal armors can be worth a lot if you happen to get the right number of sockets for the runeword you want to put in it, also assuming the durability dissappears(indestructible rw's) or doesn't matter(merc rw's).

As an extra note - it applies the 'extra' 50% bonus to the TOTAL defense when you stick it in the cube. So in essence, after you've done this, you have 125% increased defense.
I have a two socket 1050 defense dusk shroud on useast ladder. 67 strength required. Soon as I get a Mal, I'll put Prudence in it, and it'll have 2400-2700 defense with 25-35 resists and self-repair. I love me some glitched armors, this thing will far outweigh Ecara.

Does this also apply to upping ethereal items in the cube ? The reason I ask is that I recently found an eth Corpse Mourn, with nearly 2000 defence. If this effect is still true, I might consider upping it for the merc.
Thanks in advance

That's actually where the bug stems from. Upgrading ethereal exceptional unique armors used to result in an ethereal elite unique armor with non-ethereal defense (remember back when everyone told you not to upgrade eth Skullder's and such?). To fix this bug Blizzard simply applied an additional 50% enhanced defense to the elite armor. Problem is it also gets applied to cube-socketing ethereal armors, so while the upgrade recipe now works as it was intended, the socketing recipe is now bugged (in the other direction). At least that's how I understand it to work.
In short, no, the bug does not apply to upgrading.
Hi,
thanks for the clarification. I was aware of the fact that upped eth armours sometimes had less def than before and that they had screwed up something in the fix.
Now I know :-)
Thanks again

Jam,
Not familar with this language. Are you sure?
All the armors I made in eth bug recipe will break eventually if I wear them.
also assuming the durability dissappears(indestructible rw's) or doesn't matter(merc rw's).
only def is buged?
socketing eth BA in cube won't help botd dmg? :D

They will. He was only referring to putting them on Mercs (in which case ethereal is better because durability never gets used up) and using them for indestructible runewords (in which case they're indestructible, duh).
