I am making a zeal pally for both PvP and PvM. I have talked to several people and have mostly got three different answers. I've been told to use either a hoz, exile, or a phoenix. I am not sure..they all sound good. I decided to come here and ask the experts. Any advice and reasoning behind it would be great. THANX for all the hlp.

If you can afford it exile is the best non-caster paladin shield.

If you want your zealot to be for both PvM and PvP, forget Phoenix. It's a horrible PvP zealot shield.

The question is: What type of pally...

I dont completely agree on this. Phoenix has its place on some specific ZvZ builds.

...namely some glass canon antiexile setups. Best pvp zealot shield is alma negra imho.

Since I am a poor player, was thinking of using alma negra as my smite/ zeal shield. Is this a good idea?

Under certain conditions it is a good idea.

I have recently switched out my HoZ with Griswold's Shield on my PVM Fant. Zealor/1 pt. Smiter (East SC Ladder). The potential to get +111 resist all with 3 x Um (102 with 3 pDia) allows me a lot more flexibility on my other items. The + to skills on HoZ just isn't worth it to me compared to the resist all benefit. Also, Gris. shield is a vortex shield and hence has top level smite damage potential, but is really hard to find (lvl 87 TC).
Exile shield would be the best considering the benefits, but really unrealistic for me as I try not to use duped items. Unless I find the high level runes required (not likely) - I am going to stick with my Gris Shield.

IMO Griswold's shield is only worth it if you wear the rest of the set as well or if you want to have a 1 frame block rate with HS for some reason (86% fbr needed). It has high str reqs (in comparison to a non-upped HoZ), it doesn't do more smite damage than an upped HoZ (and it varies from 5 to 87 in contrast to a fixed 46 for a zakarum shield which means more risk), it has a low defense, it has a worse base blocking chance and it doesn't really have a lot of mods on its own (although you have to consider the possible mods from three sockets in comparison to one socket for a HoZ). If you add a PDiamond or Um rune to a HoZ, you have 69 or 72% res and it won't be difficult to get 76% respectively 73% from elsewhere to max it.
BTW, upping a HoZ makes no sense for a zealot because it's only worth it to deal more smite damage and zealots don't smite to deal regular damage, but to apply crushing blows with an attack that always hits.

The main usage of gris shield is in uber tristram vs mephi, since it can provide up to 111 all res. And since it is pvm,you can equip it fairly easy, since guil face and dracul's alone can give 30 strength. A tgods here,a charm there and a base strength of 8x is possible. As for the smite damage that fluctuates a lot,a redeemer can fix that easily.

Another long gone thread resurfaces.
Phoenix adds alot of damage to your attack and the firestorm doesn't bother your zeal. But with grief and forti you are already dealing ridiculous damage. Exile if you want a defensive approach, phoenix if you want a heavy cannon.
