Maybe this is common and well documented but I guess I've just never caught it. Here goes:

I go in a game wearing my bramble and gores and cast venom (no weird pre-buff, this is full bramble dueling gear). My ww damage is...
claw 1: 4290 to 4662
claw 2: 4603 to 5312

Next, I replace bramble gear with ghost gear, i.e. lose bramble and gores and put on enigma and dancers. My ww damage with recast venom in new equipment becomes...
claw 1: 2655 to 3058
claw 2: 2989 to 3747

Ok, so so far no big deal. But NOW, I go back to bramble sin mode. I replace the enigma and dancers with bramble and gores. I recast venom. I would expect it to read exactly the same as the first time I cast it with the exact same equipment. But I get this...
Claw 1: 3472 to 3826
Claw 2: 3785 to 4476

Exact same equipment both times, two VERY different results in the damage screen. This happens the same in every game.

Is this just a character screen glitch I'm not aware of? I've always just been bramble or just been ghost or only used bramble to pre-buff. I haven't switched dueling modes, or at least I have never double checked the damage screen I guess. So what am I missing? Am I just being air-headed about something?

Are you trying to cast a lower level venom over a higher level one?

In the case of higher level being cast more recently, it replaces lower level ones, however casting a lower level venom will have no effect if a higher level one is in place. So my guess is on ghost setup you have +4 venom from enigma/dancers, which puts it at a higher level than a bramble cast, dispite lower damage. Then when you go back on bramble and attempt to cast the more damaging venom, it's a lower level and you are left with your enigma/dancer level venom still active, and recieving the second mastery from bramble.

Ok, that explains it then. I've never switched set-ups so often in a game so I've just never nocticed it before. The second bramble cast is higher damage but lower level than the ghost cast so that's it. Thanks.
