I am on my way to build some decent ladder characters; most of them are at their later 70. When will these characters expired? if this would happen. When they are expired, where will they go? back to regular i.e. non-ladder?

This is my first time doing ladders so excuse my newbie question. Tx all.

nl and ladder chars last the same time. if ur char isn't perm'd then it'll expire within 10days.
if hes perm'd, then they last generally 3 months or 90 days. this msg will usually start showing how long he'll last within 60 or so days left.

if they expire, they are lost and nothing u can do to get them back.

Ladder will end - sometime.
Nobody knows when, so its not even worth asking. You'll notice when it happens...

When it ends, all ladder characters will be converted into non-ladder characters.
You will be able to keep playing them on non-ladder as any non-ladder character you have now.
A new ladder will start, and everything will be as now, with the only difference is that the ladder is reseted, no items, no high level characters etc. Back to scratch!

The reasons I asked this question is b/c I found people use the word "season"; sounds like they will end every three months and everyone must start from scratch and the competition for the throne starts again. It make sense to me since if not the top rankers will be there forever and no one will ever feel interest to play the game.

Another reason is that if the characters will expired on a predetermined calender date, I may as well wait for the next season to start my building or else all my effort will go in vain without even accomplish anything.

i think that ur choice of wording wasn't very good for this question, turns out that ur asking 2 completely different things.

1) when season ends, ur chars will turn from ladder to non (depends on which one u started on, nonladder will stay on non)

2) seasons dont have a predetermined time, for all u know, bliz can end ladder tomorrow.

3) expiring chars have the 10day period when u first create them, when u play 2 hours with them, that'll disappear and they have a 90 day expire date instead. u can refresh them every while so they dont expire.

No season has lasted only 3 months yet. The shortest season we've had so far was season 1, which lasted over 8 months.

Here are the recent seasons of the ladder, since when 1.10 came out:

Season 1: from when 1.10 came out in October 2003 to July 2004 (10 months)
Season 2: from July 2004 to when 1.11 came out in August 2005 (13 months)
Season 3: from August 2005 to present (7 months so far...)

Can you tell me past Ladder reset dates? Just for statistics. I want to guess, when this ladder will end.

Alright:

Season 1 started: 28 October 2003
Season 1 ended: 08 July 2004
(lasted for 255 days, or 8 months, 11 days)

Season 2 started: 08 July 2004
Season 2 ended: 08 August 2005
(lasted for 397 days, or 1 year, 1 month and 1 day)

Season 3 started: 08 August 2005

I have a related question. My Ladder chars are now fairly high level, and have a moderate amount of wealth. What should I do once the end of the season is announced? Namely, should I be making spirit shields like mad? Or else, upgrading my exceptional armors? I've only been on the realms for two months now.

What Ladder items become valuable on non-ladder when the rollovers happen?

The ladder season will end 1 week after I find a ber rune. It's happened that way for the last 2 ladder seasons. I'll keep you posted.

What Ladder items become valuable on non-ladder when the rollovers happen?I would:
1. Make Insights like mad. Even in crappy, normal polearms. Just take anything suitable polearm and make an Insight in it.
2. Make Spirits like crazy, both in monarchs and Pal shields.
3. If you can afford it, buy Griefs and Faiths and Forts. They become insanely valuable on NL.
Yes, many Ladder only items become very valuable when they get dumped on to NL.

If you can afford it, mainly buy Griefs, they are the items that get the biggest bonus to value when they switch over from ladder to nonladder (my observation on Europe realm)
