View Full Version : "You have been temporarily restricted..."
"from this realm". Sure this happends to me from time to time, and it usualy only lasts a little while. This time though, I have not been able to play on bnet for several hours. What the heck is wrong??? I play on Europe, ladder, SC, don't use any types of cheats, and I have a very stable internet connection (10/10). In the game I played in before I got the "You have been temporarily restricted..." I did nothing wrong, no fast aura shifing or anything! I have payed for this game, and I expect to be able to play it!

if you make too many games too fast, or if you switch characters too fast within a game you can get a temp ban....the ban lasts longer if you keep trying to loggin....just wait a few hours and try later

relax, just do something else in the mean time, happened to me once that I couldnt connect for 12 hours...
you just need to wait ;)
probably like stompwampa said, reason lies in fast switching between chars, creating several games in a short period... :)
Thanks for the help.
I still think bnet could at least tell you the time you have been banned, so that you know when you can log in again without resetting the timer.

that would require them to care about the d2 players ;-)
Battle Net has been free of charge for 6 years and the latest patch, 1.11 came out 5 years after the original release. But, yeah, "they" do not care about D2 players.
Does anyone know the time limits of a temp ban? It would be a good thing to know so you wont reset it with only minutes to go before it's lifted...

Anyone know for certain how long this lasts? its happened to me twice and its a major pain...
The actual duration of a temp ban can vary, so it's difficult to really say how long each individual one will go for. Some people have reported it lasting only about 15 mins, while others have been out for hours. I've actually heard of some people who have been out for a day or so as well.
According to Blizzard's support page on this (http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adt0689p), if the ban lasts more than 3 days, then you should contact them (using the link provided).
everytime i got this msg i just wait for 1.5 hour ~ 2 hours. And I could log on again. DO NOT try to log in every 5 mins. It will only make the restriction period go longer. Just wait for 1.5~2 hours. You should be able to play again :)
..does it really make the restriction period go longer? Maybe it's only a psychology thing, lol.

For some strange reason, I decided to go out and try to get myself banned for a while just to find out the causes. This is what I came up with:
1. I spammed a lot in game, and it kicked me out after i left the game.
2. I switched characters real fast and it kicked me out after a bit.
3. I switched between my pally's auras with the mouse wheel really fast and i got kicked out.
That's what I came up with, so I assume any type of annoying spam type deal gets you kicked off the realm for a while.
I got that message a few minutes ago.. I was in a private game just playing away and bang!
I exited, googled up the message, found this thread, started diablo, tried again and it worked.
~ two minutes.

lol :P
I just got the ban to atm. Was ingame with a mule char to get 2 hours of playing time, so the char would become parmenent instead of expiring in 10 days. Then i probably got banned because i started using grabit and downloading with it. When i went in game and tried to select items in stash, or click on stash, it didn't work. Álmost the same thing as when you have lag, but different. I wasn't switching chars though at that moment. When i exited the game it gave the message.
Guess i'll just wait 2 hours then :)

okay so a guy from blizzard just told me there is no way they can stop the restriction PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT and they want to make diablo3 diablo2has to many bugs im protesting this bull ****
Okay, so here is what I have gathered from experience about the temporary restrictions. Hopefully this helps anyone curious.
You get restricted for fast scrolling (your mouse wheel, I think this is part of the antibot system bliz has in place).
You get restricted for creating and leaving more than 20 games in 1 hour. Here is the catch though, if you stay in the 20th game for at least 5 minutes it seems to be ok. So say for example you create and leave 20 games in a half hour, the 20th game and every subsequent game after that you had better stay in 5 minutes or perm.
I have found that flashing the trade screen when muling does seem to work, as I have gone over the 20 minute mark. Of course this only works if you have 2 computers running 2 diablos and can perm your own games.
Blizzard's security policy does not discriminate between CD keys, it goes by IP address. I have tested this as well. Getting a temp ban on my desktop means no login from the laptop as well.
How long you are restricted from the realms depends on your last restriction. It seems to me, the length of restrictions reset every week. For instance, If I get a 15 minute restriction on Monday and one on Tuesday -The Tuesday one will last longer. If I get one Monday and the next the following Tuesday, it is only 15 minutes as well.
The restriction times for me seem to be 15 minutes, 1 hour, 3 hours and that's as far as I have gone. After 3 hours, I make sure not to get anymore for the week :). I am guess from other people though, that after 3 hours it jumps to something long like 6 hours, 12 hours and then 24.
Logging in once or twice does not increase the time your temp ban lasts, nor does it reset the timer. I have tested this 2 times. On what would normally be a 15 minute restriction 2 randomly spaced attempts did not increase the time. However, repeated and regularly spaced login attempts has increased times for me. Again, for instance a 15 minute restriction with 5 attempts every 3 minutes bumped me to a half hour from the last attempt at logging back in. This again seems to be an antibot policy to keep bots from attempting to autolog back in.
I have not tested spamming messages in games or chat, but my advice would be to not do this. I have used profane language in a public channel and found myself (on that CDkey alone) in the void for 3 months. So my advice would be don't spam, don't be obnoxious or profane in public games/chats.
So how do you protect yourself from temp bans?
Here's what I have come up with.
1. If you are mfing or leveling or questing try and make sure you games last a minimum of 3 minutes -This will keep you from hitting 20 games in 1 hour.
2. Be very careful if sharing a connection with someone. So if you and 2 roommates all play through the same router, make sure you are perming games whenever you can. You may get a temp restriction because of them.
3. Understand the type of internet connection you. There are two basic types of connections to your ISP. DHCP and PPPoE. Most ISP's provide you with a dynamic IP address, which means you are "leasing" it from the connection server. This can come in handy for longer bans. If you have a dynamic IP address simply turn off your cable/dsl modem (not router) for ~15 minutes. This should release your MAC address from a bound state and allow your next authentication to get a new lease on a different IP address. This obviously is only good for bans longer than 15 minutes.
4. Some ISP's offer advanced settings and services in their modems GUI (if it has routing capabilities). This means you can log into your router-modem and tell it manually release your MAC address then renew your connection, which should get you a new IP address. This is not the same as using ipconfig /release, /renew from the command window. That will only renew your local area IP assigned by your router.
5. Bribe/make buddies with someone at your ISP. I used to work for my ISP when I was in college as a tech support supervisor. When I do inadvertantly get a ban for longer than 15 or so minutes, I call my buddies there up and have them manually reset my lease by unbinding my MAC address.
If I think of anymore I'll be sure to add them.
What if I have friends over playing on he same internet but from different cd-keys (of)???
Do I have make it 20/x where x is the number of people sitting on the connection?

Are you joking!? I was in Baalruns with a level 95 paladin, each game was going up to 2:57 minutes HAHAHAHAHA! I joined over 60 of them though haha

I think its lasts for like 15mins and damn it just when I found someone to trade me a 19/19 barb torch for my ist..
I'm logging to check every six hours. I was shut down at 2:00pm this afternoon, and it's 12:30am now. I know how to force a restriction and I know how to avoid one. What is being expressed here, is the observation of a new behavior in the restriction event. It is this new attribute that we, the very concerned hobbyists and veteran gamers of this thread, wish to have succinctly clarified. Orphan quotes their page proper, yet a three day expultion will certainly prompt me to become what bnet states a profound fear of creating, and that is sell all my diablo 2 concerns for real money to kids in my own town, and abandon the broken game like I probably should do.
Does Bnet ever communicate with this website? and if not, why not? and why would that not be seen as a further problem?
