Does Holy Shield increase your total defence or just the defence of your shield?

It used to be only shield defense though.

no, with holy shield on, u get a ctb 35% extra as well as up'ding smite dmg and total def. (35% ctb assuming high enough HS lvl)

No... like all skills that have a mana cost, they require you to cast them in order to "function" at all. It's not a passive defense bonus; it's an active one.

However, I don't really understand the heart of the question. If you put points into it, it will be used most likely. It has a long duration (several minutes), and you don't have to keep it on your "to use" skill bar. You simply cast it once, and then switch back to your Auras or whatever you wish and Holy Shield is "on" in the background.

Example:

Left Click - Attack (Zeal for example).
Right Click - Holy Shield (Cast once).
Right Click - After casting Holy Shield, switch to your Aura (Fanaticism for example).

You're using attack/aura - yet Holy Shield is "working" in the background, kind of like a passive bonus, but more like how a warcry works. Cast and go. HolyShield does not work like an aura, where you have to keep it selected all times for the benefit.

Since patch 1.10 was introduced,holy shield multiplies your whole base defense and not only the shield's defense.
