I just found an "Aldur's Rhythm Jagged Star" mace. I realize it's a set item, but it has 3 sockets. I did I find a fluke, or is this normal? :jig:

It's normal. Some set items are socketed. Nearly every weapon, helmet, shield and armor in the game (if not every), can have at least one socket.

Some items are always socketed no matter what, although their socket numbers may vary. Natalya's Armor is an example, and so if Heaven's Light, a Scepter that can have 1 or 2 sockets.

The only "item" that will have no sockets are runewords. But I guess that's pretty obvious. Apart from that, you can have normal, magical, rare, unique and set items socketed. If they don't have a socket, you can add one with the Act V quest.

Can I use this mace to make a runeword, or doesn't it work on set items?

Doesn't work in set items, magic items, rare items or unique.

Has to be a plain item.

What would you suggest putting in the sockets?

What would you suggest putting in the sockets?

I canīt answer that without any more information.

What does the character build look like (do you allow yourself to move the item to another charater, so there may be many possibilities?), where in the game are you, what skills do you use most, which situations seem to give you the most trouble, how high are your resists, life, is it "Softcore" or Hardcore, do you play alone or with a party? Etc...

How do you add sockets to a currently socketed, or unsocketed item? Can it be done?

once a item is socketed, that number can't change no matter what u do. if u mean that its socketed with jewels/runes and u want to remove them, then u just need a hel rune and tp thingy.

What would you suggest putting in the sockets?Nothing, unless you are extremely poor that you have nothing better than this weapon. In that case, try shael runes.

How do you use hel and tp to remove?

In the Horadric Cube, put in a hel rune, a tp scroll and the item with the sockets and hit transmute. This recipe will remove any items from the sockets, but it will not remove the sockets itself. Note that any items that were in the sockets will be destroyed.
