What is your single favorite movie? (one per person please, no ties...)

I suppose it depends on my mood.

Right now, I am really enjoying High Tension.

the question is not that simple when there are millions upon millions of movies to choose from, and tons of them are really good.

Way too hard to decide. If you'd asked me as a kid, it would've been Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back. Now the choice is out of about a hundred.

The original 4 hour Dune movie.

Really? I suppose it has a certain charm. I always thought it felt like they tried to pack way too much into a short space of time, though.

Yeah, I dug the whole "voices in the head" thing they had going. Plus, some of the characters were superb (Stilgar, the old bene gesserit woman, Paul, and Thufir Hawat ---all very well-acted), and, of course, it had Patrick Stewart in it.

And really, it's one of the few movies that come even close to being as good as the book.

The original 4 hour Dune movie.

The one from the 80's? That movie had one of my favorite reviews. It said if you have not read the book don't see the movie you won't understand it. If you have read the book, don't see the movie you will be disapointed. I saw it and was. I mean for crying out loud it rained at the end. That would kill the worms and destroy the spice.

Blazing Saddles

Dr. Strangelove rocked.

Planet of the Apes rocked, as long as you mean the old one with Heston. I have the box set off those. :wink2:

I do indeed mean Dondrei's former avatar. That has to be one of the most dramatic scenes in movie history. Even better than the same actor and "it's made with people"

O Crap how could have forgotten to sneak Alien in my list. But I will stick with Cool Hand Luke if I have to pick just one.

I've still only seen I and III, must get around to II since everyone says it's the best. The first was awful and the third was silly (but with a few good bits, I  Bruce Campbell).

Evil Dead is just weird, hard to tell if a person will like it or not so it's hard to recommend, Army of Darkness is ridiculous and fun, and Evil Dead 2 is that happy medium between the horror and the goofy

Crappy-chic, I liked it too. If you really wanted insults though, you should have gone for Street Fighter.

Jurassic Park.

A great movie. I also liked Jurassic Park 2 (Jeff Goldblum was great). The travesty that was 3 is showing on TV right now. That's what you get when you don't base it on a novel by the original author.

It was barely based on the novel. And the novel was much better.
Especially the part about the mathematical theory of the gamblers ruin. Basically one negative event can cascade into disaster. That's an oversimplification of course. I thought of it when Doc made his thread telling us of his problems.

The original Dawn of the Dead. Memorable characters, charming low budget, and a good simple story with a great tongue-in-cheek subtext about consumerism.

My mind is struggling to find my favorite movie of all time since I love some many. So I guess I'll have to cheat and say Band of Brothers. I know it's not a "movie" but it's by far the best peice of cinema I've yet to see in my 20 years of living.

As for movies I'm going to have to come up with a list:
Indy and the Last Crusade (Harrison Ford + Sean Connery = classic)
Seven
Shawshank
Pulp Fiction
12 Angry Men
Groundhog Day
Forrest Gump
Good Will Hunting
LoTR: Two Towers
Field of Dream

I guess I'll cut it off there simply b/c this could take a while. Too hard to narrow down!

Dondrei
28-01-2006, 23:14
LoTR: Two Towers

Why did you pick the Two Towers? I thought that was the one that had the worst adaptation - irritating and unnecessary plot changes, not enough Ents and the fact that it ends in the wrong place (that last one was unforgivable).

I agree. There was nowhere near enough Ent action. I don't think they quite captured the characters of the Ents that you get in the book either :hanky:

Rius666
29-01-2006, 01:26
I picked the second one mainly b/c that's the one that entertained me the most. I've read any of the LoTR books so I guess I didn't really know how it was suppose to end. It's always touchy with book->movie adaptations...people who've read the book already have an expectation going into the movie while people who haven't read the book don't know what to expect. I didn't know what to expect out of that movie, and all I know is that I felt that was a very good high quality movie, better than the first or third one; even if the second wasn't entirely accurate I still loved it.

Its the most shocking movie I saw and still it made me think, theres not many movies out there that get ya thinking. Talking about deeper thinking.

Of course Braveheart have the second place for me (One of the few movies that caught me a tear)

NotLD is a classic - but for the love of mercy, do beware of the 30th anniversary edition. It's terrifying, but not in a good way. :yikes:
