Well, as the standard is, in a fvf duel, opponents use resist light + rep to completely negate their opponents foh, but after reading some intruiging info on the pvp forum, i am viewing this in a new light.
Apparently, in a foh vs foh duel, if 1 player has a higher lvl of conviction, the opponents conviction will do nothing to you.
In that case, you wouldnt need to stack resists, right? you could just get 80% light res (from darkglow) and then focus on getting loads of + skills to be sure your conviction is higher than theirs.
This is xpac info, not sure if it relates to classic.
Anyone know?

All I know is that on West, FOH'ers don't usually stack LR.
They shoot the Fist with Conviction.
Then quickly swap to Resist Lightning milliseconds after they strike.
Sometimes the duels can take up to 3 minutes.

It is true higher level of conviction stops other conviction from working, found this out dueling a friend as i had stopped my conviction at level 17 i kept losing :( to someone 10 levels below me
I'm assuming it may use the logic as with other auras.
Note that auras work differently to, say warcries.
Things like BO are automatically overridded by the last cast.
But if you get a load of hammerdins with different levels of conc, it uses the highest, it doesnt even flicker inbetween different levels as used ot in old patches.
Hence I'm assuming (not tested) that this would work for conviction, albeit that this would be bugged in not noticing difference between positive and negative effects.
Does pose a nice survival point in CS though if true
*Edit* If someone could test this, it might be cool to try 2 chars in a party, one being pala with high conviction, against another pala with low conviction and seeing whether the weaker conviction will affect the third char.

It seems to work with monsters also, as much players use it to override Mephisto's Conviction in Über Tristram runs.
