View Full Version : Resists vs. Attributes on Armor
Aside from FHR and ED, which do you prefer to have on your armor? Also, make sure you state for which character you would want those mods on. O, and don't take the "I want a balanced armor" route. It's one or the other.

I'd prefer resists.
Why?
Because an extra 40 life or +10 strength which equals around 30 life won't make a difference when dealing with ice orbs, the fires of chaos sanctuary or the deadly strike of a fist of heaven compared to the help which heavy resists will.
*For all characters aside for a necromancer who are fragile as hell and need life badly*

Thats what hawkmail and 3 soc shields are for. You change armors based on your opponents. Res don't do crap in bvb.

when looking for good helms//armour i look for fhr + resists, b/c i know the added cost of rares with + life are not worth the extra cost... then again i am poor

For barbs, I love using ornates. A good ornate to me is not complete without a lot of strength, preferably at least 10, if not the lovely number 15. The two main suffixes I want on an ornate are strength and life, the more the better. The other one could be dex, fhr, or whatever. For prefixes, I want fire and lightning resists, because I'll use hawkmail for cold sorcs. High defence is a must for ornates. 870+ is a good range on legits.
For pure BvB orns, I want high str, life, and defence above all. Dexterity is a minor addition, and resists don't really matter to me. My current favorites are:
NL: 883def 10str 6dex 43life 20cr
L: 870def 15str 3dex 22life dual res (don't remember which)
For sorcs, I basically always use twitch. If I don't, I want high block, either bone, grim, or (preferably) tower shield
Because I like to use towers with rare armor, I like to have high strength on it. 24FHR is pretty much necessary, and I want high life.
Depending on the armor type, I want either three resists (not psn), or for mage plates, two resists and nice defence. Mage plates with defare more useful for a pala.
For a PvM armor, fire resist is most important, then light, then cold. For PvP, Cold, then fire or light. I rarely use hawkmail on a sorceress, if ever.
Ideal sorc armor is:
24FHR
15str
60life
30cr/fr/lr
The exception for sorc armor is for replen armor, in which case I would rather have replen than strength.
I prefer mage plates on hammerdins (only PvM with these), and having good defence is nice on them because it helps tank somewhat in CS. +strength isn't usually needed on a paladin unless I'm using greaves or a tower shield. Pretty much anything is welcome in place of the strength on a pala armor, but dex is helpful here, because I prefer shard over a scepter. +2amu, +2shield, and one SOJ is enough damage for me. I'm used to 80FCR when I do play hdin. Fire res is a must, and lightning is nice too. I wouldn't mind cold res on it, but CR is hardly necessary for CSing.

3soc shields are lame.
3soc shields are as lame as juvs.
Of course, unless its a 1v1, using a 3soc will mean you die one WW easily.

where can I find ornates?
hell diablo?
Ive never found a single one
maybe because Im building a hamerdin and my comp is extremely laggy - hell = death most of the time

To me, FHR is the most overvalued mod when I'm looking for items. why? Well, for a pally, if I want FHR I'll wear my bloodfist gloves (GODLY) and for a sorc, I prefer to tank than dance around all run.
My paladin uses a armor with mods:
+49 life
+29 fire resist
+29 cold resist
also +2 str +4 dex (these mods don't help my build)
I look for high hit points and as close to 30/30 resists (or 60+ total not counting poison) for armors on paladin. If I were silly enough to think that FHR was as important as Life, Resists, FCR, +skills, or +stats... then I would think about finding a nice fhr armor. My total fhr is 10% on my paladin, from a helm. He does better than most, and his gear is not as valuable on the trade market.
For a shard paladin, I think bloodfist are a good glove. If you get FR to max when Conviction + Lower Resists cast, and you have enough + stats to wear shard and gear (bloodfists are not viable for scepter pal) then bloodfist are my favorite glove because + 40 hps. Some times it is more fun to kill super fast... so gloves might need +resists to make up for other gear or magefist. But for hardcore, I think, it's good to have as much life as possible in case of lag-drop or something. I've reached something like 4,3-- life on shard paladins in the past.
For sorc, I look for most +hps, +mana, +resists. I always prefer the frost nova/static timed attack approach to sorc play, instead of the common tele and timed attack approach many sorcs use today. FHR is not as important to me because hopefully I pick a nice spot, and I'd rather have high life, mana, and resists to take the Obliv Knight attacks. I think when I build a sorc she is usually much stronger than my peers who are using fhr intensive gear and sacrificing the important things, like life, mana, resists.

You can have both but I would choose nice resists over fhr (as long as a solid amount of life is also involved, you need 2 of the 3, fhr resists and or life)
dont forget ED. for a nice armor mod With a tanking pally, High def with life can be all you need as long as resists are sorted out. Getting that defense up over 3k with no shout makes life a lot easier

I think fhr is very important for most build. On a hammerdin, not so much although some is nice.
Ever see a sorc die while teleing to cs? (me included :/)
If they have good resists, its usually due to bad fhr + fbr, or a combination of the 2. If the sorc has no juvs (this is a sc cs run im talking about) and little to no fhr, they are screwed.
I consider the 30% breakpoint mandatory for any sorc i play, ideally 60%
My current blizzer has 40% fhr (only 2% away from breakpoint) With a 30/20 10 fhr priz bone shield ill be good to go, but for now im using a 30/20 20 pris magic bone shield :O
I would prefer to have a 24 fhr nice dual res armour w/ no life, than a nice resist armour with high life... especially in the pvp scene
