View Full Version : Rune Master Ettin Axe
Perhaps a silly question, but can you put a rune word in this? I know in general you can't with uniques, but with a name like "Rune Master," you have to wonder...
Nope, the same rule that applies to other uniques also apply to this one :wink3:
Shucks, and I found a 5-socket one too. Would've been ridiculous. Any suggestions on what runes I should aim for (WW axe barb)?
And thanks for the quick reply.
Check out this thread: http://forums.diabloii.net/showthread.php?t=417303. There are several suggestions.

Is it eth? If it is you can Zod it and make it a g.g. item.
If not, 5x Lo all the way. So deadly your opponent will say "OUCH I wish your Runemaster Ettin Axe wasn't so DEADLY."

Bit of a waste of 5 Lo's really...Since for 5 Lo's you could buy / make MUCH better weapons / axes...but meh...
5 Lo'd Runemaster would be unique and certainly fun if you like fun builds and have spare wealth. I know I'D try it

Like some Grief's.

Like some Grief's.
Yeah...But he might be on NL....
Anyway, yeah, DS on weapons is good. But a bit over-rated. Since DS Caps off somewhere. And with stuff like Highlords it's not as needed...but anyhoo.
Gogo with etheral, ed/ias, ed/ias, ed/ias, Lo, Zod rune master!
Yeah...But he might be on NL....
Though runemaster itself is ladder only, so it's probably a higher chance that he got it on ladder, rather than traded for one on NL.

A Eth Zod'ed + 4x Lo'ed Runemaster is seriously deadly.
Here in NL - Grief = more than 5, unless really really really crap.
EBotdz would be more preferable than Runemaster though.

I made a 4xohm'd 1x zod eth rune master (265% base) and it OWNS. With my zealer i STILL reached fastest zeal fps w/ gear and good fana, i also reached EIGHTY percent deadly strike with gear, and i also reached 50% crushing blow. 15% open wounds. 6k zeal w/o fort or pheonix. Pwnd the pants off everythnig in hell during 8player game baal runs. Its pretty good for PVP, and its especially fun when people ask to see your gear. honestly, i coulda made several ebotdz or deathz, but having a pimped out runemaster is unique, and fun. :P

Its a good weapon, but the point is that you can get a much better weapon allot cheaper, even tha lowest Grief is still better.
Its really sad, but a cheap RW like Grief is the best choice 99% of the time in mele duels.

With respect to damage alone, that runemaster is better than a low Grief. It deals an average of 419 damage while it's just 417.5 for an average Grief BA. However, Grief has a few more advantages, like IAS, ITD, PMH and the damage bonus adds to smite.
Regarding efficiency, Grief is better, but efficiency isn't everything, else it would be better to work longer and harder to earn more money, so I can buy everything at ebay or not play silly games at all :azn:

Grief allso has 20% DS so even the lowest Grief will do more dmg over time.

True, i just pointed out that Grief pretty much allways is the best mele weap.
Not the most stylish

Come on, he really made a contribution.
I'm not very experienced, what weapons are these "much better much cheaper" options people are talking about?

As an ironical sidenote, Arbedark made that comment a year ago :azn:
What's better and cheaper: A couple of runewords and elite uniques. Runemaster alone isn't that expensive, but the things to be added to make it a good weapon cost a lot. Grief neefs just one HR while you already need Zod to make an ethereal one useful at all and the other things needed to make it comparable with the usual endgame weapons won't be cheap as well.

It depends on your definition of "good".
I made this with some rare jewels I had on hand for a "poor-man's PvP" tournament, once upon a time (the tourney had several restrictions on top-TC and high-rune items). As a weapon-switch/charge option, I thought it was pretty solid for the low(ish) cost.

Hehe, I like to the same thing with them. What else are you going to do with all those rare 20-30%ED jewels anyway? :scratchchin:
I'm using a similar weapon as offhander for a Frenzy MF barb, where I didn't want to use Ravenfrost because of the cold damage. Mine has about 40 less ED%, but I wanted mana leech somewhere on my gear so I put one pskull in there as well.

It depends on your definition of "good".
That depends a lot on how rich you are.
A runemaster has up to 270%ed. Let's assume yours has a base of 250% and 5 sockets. That's already a top end one. In order to reach 405%, you would need 155%ed. You need at least 4 rare jewels (maximum of 30%ed) and one magical one with 35%, although I think it's more likely that you used 3 rares and 2 magical ones. With all the additional affixes, let's assume your runemaster together with the runes is worth Ist. For that price you can make your own eth Oath weapon which will deal far more damage and has 50%IAS as well.
But I'm considering the case from a different point of view. It's not that you have a certain amount of currency and buy weird rare jewels from it. It's more like you said, you find the weird jewels yourself and you have to do something with them. They are worth something, but they are hard to trade. I might not be worth the efforts to get them sold. I'm usually using them on my IK barb :azn:
