View Full Version : Cows and Quest Drops Questions
Hi I was wondering if anyone could clear up any myths about cows and quest drops. First off regarding cows
1. I hear that you will not get the king quest if,
a.you are unpartied and don't hit the king but remain in the cow level
b. are partied but outside of the Secret Cow Level
c. Have not done the diablo quest for that specific difficulty
d. The person killing has already done the quest before
2. You can tell if the king cow has been killed if he drops a stamina potion
And regarding quest drops, is there really a change between the drops when you do it for the quest or you're repeating it or it that just a myth?
if it's true would it work if you got a mule to create a game and killed the bosses?
Thanks in advance for any intelligent replies.

Some of what you say is sort of correct let me try to explain
It is all about the person that delivers the killing blow if they kill when the quest is active for them everyone in cow level including none partied people, and people that havent even got the quest by killing diablo on that level of difficulty yet, will get quest completed as so will not be able to open the portal (yes you can tell if it was quest cause he drops like 8 stamina potions) you are safe if you are not in cow level eg town even if partied with killer.
The quest is only active if you can make the cow portal (i.e. you have killed diablo on that level of difficulty and have not been in cow level when quest was completed by someone else)
so it is safe to kill king if
1. you have done so before on that difficulty
2. you havent killed diablo yet on that difficulty
3. some noob has closed the quest for you whilst you were in cow level
As for drops it is same as other bosses if you havent done quest yet and it is not open for you
e.g. you havent killed diablo yet and someone else like a mule has opened portal for you,
then you get more rares on drop than if you had completed the quest, but it would seem to me that if you then add in some mf it messes with the drop so you need to keep your level of mf to less than 50% strange but true.
Only problem with low mf is that you seem to get mainly normal rares instead of exceptional if you killing in nm and hell but ofc doesnt matter in normal as not many exceptional items drop in normal difficulty.
Also drops seem to be seriuosly skewed in favou of certain low req sets.
I went trying to farm him with a new char, and he dropped arcanna's skull cap 6 times in a row (And no im not bs'ing).
Why can't he do that with deaths sash eh?

I have no idea what Rawly is talking about.
Magicfind doesn't affect if the weapon is normal or exceptional, that is dependant on the enemy's level.
The more magic find you have, the more chance of magic/set/unique dropping, that is all, no hidden forumlas, he is basing all his theory off whatever luck or chance he has had with ____% magic find on.

hmm... i was under the impression that the quality of the item was effected by %mf, im sure i read that some where, but i have been playing the game for a long time and i could be mistaken as things change and the brain gets more confused. I certainly dont base anything off anecdotal evidence as i am a maths teacher and understand the ways of randomness, even when this games sudo random number generator seems to be seeded to produce similar drops at certain times.
Oh and cow king is great for droping the uniques - tarn, twitch, hotspurs, gull, and others of low level, great for deaths set as i have hundreds of gloves and belts from him, i suggest you run him with as much mf as you can in normal difficulty. With a 500%+mfing find item barb using enchant to kill you get lots of uniques as find item skill works on cow king :)
