View Full Version : OT: So, whats your reason(or excuse rather) to keep on playing Diablo2?

After a transfer gone horribly wrong,It got me thinking... why are we still playing d2?

Think about it, you spend hours upon hours of your free time leveling up your character, eduring endless amounts of homophobic comments, fighting the same sprites over and over, only to have it become "useless" in the end?

Is it even worth the trouble?

When I first started diablo 2, I was afraid of the zombies that nested right outside of the town. So my first hour of "enjoying" Diablo was listening to the npcs babble. But I still loved it! But once I mustered up the courage to wander away from the warmth of the fire, I became a freaking killing machine. Clicking away until my little hands became sore and numb. But nothing could match the grin pasted on my face.

But nowdays, after playing through the game countless times, the fun factor went "kuplunk". The only enjoyment I recieved was dueling, but since the advent of 1.10. That went pretty much "kuplunk" too.

But one thing always had me coming back for more... the Orb Sorc, hence the comment "Orb sorcs pwnz joo all" that I use to post awhile back.

No other game could match teleporting around like a black man on crac... err I mean a kid who drank too much Surge. The novelty of teleporting never wears off, and no other hack-n-slash game could match it!

Sorcs took alot of skill to operate, one false move and your saying "Hi" to your maker. Aiming orb properly took practice and SvS was a freaking blast and not to mention a test of skill.

So, why do you keep on playing diablo 2?

I want to make myself a name, I want to be at the top of the ladder with the 'big boys'. I want to make an elite team so good that I'll never be laughed at or have some high level jerk say "Haha, I pwn ur accnt ez". I want to be able to defend myself against all angles of Diablo 2.

Damn sight cheaper than most other stuff out there.

Would probably get WoW but too set on not paying top whack for something that has been out so long.

I was hoping for WoW to fail miserably. Great disappointment for me there, and here's hoping D3 isn't subscription based :(

The reason I still play? I haven't found another game that hooks me in like this one. I have tried Morrowind(even played it exclusively for a while after it came out), while an incredible game and quite large and replayable, I keep coming back to D2. I can't wait for Oblivion to come out, but I will certainly come back to D2. No doubt about that. I have tried the Civ series, and even bought Civ 4 the week it came out, but I keep coming back to D2. I have tried Guild Wars. I played for a while, but haven't been on to play it for a few months, I would rather play D2. What is it about D2? I can't quite answer it. I don't know what it is.

I would be willing to bet thet there will be people who will still play D2 even after D3 comes out. There will be a Classic forum at our new D3 site, buit it would include D2 Classic and LOD. All would be considered Classic by that time.

Because MMORPGs are way too slowed paced and the PKing is so slow and character skilled base (excluding the PK server on Asheron's Call which just became one big gank fest) and no other good games that you can casually play and have fun have came out.

Why play ... yes I've wondered that myself too.

I cannot put my finger on it, but this game has me hooked like no other game I've ever played. Sure I've played alot more than D2 ... but even after quiting for about a year ... I'm again hooked, including the line and sinker ;)

Lost all my other chars, so I *have* to start all over again.

It's sortof unexplainable, but I think we all want to MF our *sses of finding that great Rare ... which you will later find duped ;)

Besides that I've also started dueling ... and find I need *alot* more practice.
Especially in the pubby games.

Bottomline ... we take all kinds of crap from 9yr olds ... just to Pwn :P

D2 is like crack... no matter how many methadones (subsitutes) you try youll always come back for more of the original :P ... no really d2 is just a good game that is lacking a bit in some areas, thats all... I jump from d2 to uo and back every now and then (bout once every 6-7 months just keep logging in to keep my accounts open [ou on a free shard ofcourse])

Methadone is used for heroine addiction and other habbit-forming opiates.

Why I still play DII, it is kind of difficult to pinpoint (as others have commented on) but one thing I can say for certain, I would rather be somewhat actively involved in passing time as opposed to the mind numbing television..:prop:

Most of the PC gamers I know change games often, I really only play DII. I don't think I have so much in common with other PC gamers, and I think that some of use who are still playing DII might agree that we are a different breed.

One thing I can always count on from DII is some peace and time to myself while I clear chaos sanc. for an hour or two.

I've made something like 5 or 6 pallys. I started to get bored... So I made a zon, and a barb, and a sorc.

When they bore me, I'll make an assasin, and a druid. When PvM bores me, I'll move onto PvP. When that bores me, I'll make a new build. Endless replayability.

The people that move on from game to game are the fps'ers

The really unique breeds are the doom connector's

Tribes players, like myself, haven't really moved on. Tribes1 was released in
'98(same year as d2) and many have stuck to it since the demo.

i think the way the game is set-up feeds some latent obsessive compulsive tendencies deep with me somewhere....the repetetive actions get really comfortable to indulge in after you've done them so many thousands of times...

also i think the item system that the game uses brings out the hidden gambler/collector in me. when you think about it, each andy or meph run, or gold-gambling session is like pulling the handle on a slot machine. but instead of dropping in a coin, you're investing a few minutes of your life." oooooo whats going to drop this time?" "oooooo this shiny new item almost just what i was after....i know just where to locate it in my collection of strange, pixellated neurosis.." "just 20 more runs..."

and the whole point, in the end? what to do with these pixels? the blood moor, i guess. though besting angst ridden teens at an aging computer game when they want to pick fights with me isnt really as rewarding as it used to be....

i guess in the end, i still play for the one basic reason that really matters.....i cant quit. and thats the sad truth of it.

I keep playing because I enjoy it. I take breaks when it gets dull and because I didnt start playing until a couple years ago, I still have new items/builds to find and play with. Plus im living in England away from friends and family, with the social life a fraction of the norm, i find myself with time to "KILL" EDITED:D

I've only been playing D2 since 1.11b came out. Around 2 weeks into January I was up to around 30 gulls (rares I trade for gulls) + 5 sojs. I wasted 2 sojs on re-rolling 2 BH's (original dmg of the BH's were 137 and 144 / used lvl 85 char to re-roll), ending up with both 100ish dmg on them. I gave away so many items for free I am now back to almost nothing on my mules. Since I mainly do MFing, I eventually hit that peak and I dumped everything I had and wanted to start all over again. That's what keeps me playing. Dueling really doesn't do it for me, but I did enjoy making a few low lvl chars to go PKing in norm games :)

I'd never reroll a battlehammer over 120 damage.

well, the 'real gamers' are the ones who play a game because it's great, but all the WoW kids.. and EQ.. and SW Galaxies and etc etc.. they have more fun with the massive multiplayer factor than great gameplay.

I would say the percentage of Tribes players is minimal compared to the number of WoW players.

yes, FPS'ers change games frequently, But I happen to know several people who play CS in CAL-leagues and that game is .. older than dii? :undecided: I know not.

Some fps'ers move from game to game. So do many MMORPG's, and other genre's.

Some fps'ers have played the same game longer than DII has been around.

what is a doom connector?

I'm a fairly prone fps'er and i still have to say the orginal UT is one of my faves, think all the updated ones lost a lot of the gameplay.
