View Full Version : How do bugged drops happen?

I'm not meaning, 'how can I make one happen' - a legitimately bugged drop is usually relatively useless, after all. What I mean is, what precisely is happening in the game code when something like a 'crafted' Viper Amulet drops? I'm trying to make my way into the game development scene, as a programmer, but this one I just can't wrap my head around.

To the mods - if this topic breaches the agreement, then please remove it. I don't want to cause trouble. This is something of a professional interest rather than an attempt to learn to hack, but I would understand if it were seen that way.

Lag. Two computers aren't "on the same page" and one sends some information and the other thinks it's getting some other kind of information, and it follows the regular procedue with this incorrect information. Packets get lost, corrupted, sent at the wrong time.
At least that's how it can happen sometimes.

yes, these kind of things are rather odd, my friend had drop a "Hell Forge Hammer Hand Axe". and he still has screenshots of it. :P

That particular incident is resulting from using the normal unique upping recipe on a hellforge hammer. I have a horadric staff hand axe as well.

Sometimes bugged items can occur simply due to a lack of "sanity checks" (for want of better word) in the code. Take the Holy Shield staffmod spawning on a sceptor. If the staffmod code loops 6 times without picking a valid skill, it'll definately select the next skill, even if under normal circumstances it's an invalid one, (when in my opinion, it should not pick a skill at all).

Wow... just thinking about bugged drops... imagine a bugged Hellfire drop. Imagine - Hellfire ring, or boots... Dear god, thats my fantasy. I hellfire ring, or boots, to drop with pally stats. I mean, it COULD happen, right? just not much of a chance. :/

If that happens, they'll become duped endlessly.

If that happens, they'll become duped endlessly. That's assuming it's picked up by someone who will dupe it... right?

They would, but if I found it I'd either -
A - Keep it and become the most godly character ever, because no matter what, I am better than you. And the showoff value is sweet.
B - sell it for an immense ammount of money to a popular d2 shop. (maybe 5000 dollars or so. I mean, someone would have to be crazy enough, if one shop had exclusive rights to it, they could take the original and personalize it, so other shops wouldn't dupe it and whatnot)
C - Learn to dupe and sell them for large ammounts of money.
Hey, it's a game, and if it helped pay for college. :)
After college, I'd so keep them.

I think most likely it'll become a hellfire SoH:)

That would be neat. Or... how about a SoH item, huh? Does nothing but has a required level, and looks really sweet. That'd beneat.

Aha... well, yes, that makes sense with the strange packets and whatnot. Don't know how I didn't see that before.. ah well, no matter. Something to think about on the hour and a half trip back and forth to school :p

On the other side of things... whoo, new smilies!

idk, if the dupers know who has it, they will try everything in their power to get it, including hacking acct of course.

D: Go to open b.net and stop ruining closed

I'm not ruining anything. Stop flaming please. Many, many people who found one would do the same thing, they just wouldn't admit it. I don't just mean Bnetters, I mean people here. I would say something like at least HALF of them probobly would. Sure, we all claim to adhere to an honest no duping, no dupes code of conduct, but how many really do? If I had imps, I'd wear them. I've got a ****ing honest streak, in addition to a slightly greedy one. At least I'll admit to both.

It's just a video game. If I found an item that ruined a videogame for some people, made it better for alot of people, and helped paid for my college, well... If you honestly think thats a bad choice, then I don't need to return fire, flame back, anything. Dear god. College or a fun game econ for all? If you wanted it changed, hypothetically, you could contact blizzard. Work hard until they delete them. It doesn't matter, because I'd have my profit.

Remember, video. Game. Zeroes and ones. Magnetic charges that define hours of our fun. Don't let it get to be more than that.
