View Full Version : Confused--when do hit bonuses apply?
I'm looking at my equipment and wondering when do these nice bonuses actually apply. My latest build is a hammerdin (crazy--I know), and it has some nice equipment. But what I am wondering is: what is considered a "hit"? When an enemy is hit by my blessed hammer do I:
a) get X% life/mana stolen per hit?
b) get damage bonuses from items (+200% dmg to undead for ex.)?
c) get increased dmg from psn/fire/light charms?
I guess is my confusion arises from the difference between magic and melee attacks. Beyond answering the above questions, if you could point me to a guide that spells all this out I would very happy :)
Thanks in advance!
a) no/ only physic damage
b) no/ only physic damage
c) no/ only physic damage
sorry to say but all that works with hammer and sorc's magic attacks is +x mana/life after each kill and stuff like that
Cool, thanks for your quick response. This will help alot with selecting equipment.

In general - if you're hitting the enemy with some sort of physical weapon (Be it an arrow, a sword, your foot, or whatever) it's considered an 'attack', whereas if you're using a spell (Basically anything else, from fireballs to tornadoes) it's an attack. There are some that blur the line, like the amazon's javalin skills tend to hit once with the javalin as well as one other effect - the strike with the weapon makes it considered an attack.
Only with attacks will you find that mods activate such as :
Crushing blow
Open wounds
Deadly strike
Chance to cast on attack/on hit
Life/mana leech
Enhanced damage
Elemental damage
The list goes on. But that's sort of a general guideline.

Not true. Elemental damage from charms can be added on to other elemental damage, as long as the skill you're using is an "attack", (like zeal, charge, guided arrow, jab, etc) like quietus says, as opposed to a "spell" like fireball, hammers, lightning, etc. Also note that while Smite is considered an "attack" not all things work with it, including added on elemental damage.
