View Full Version : Martyr
Logger bring my old idea for a new character back.
20 Sacrifice, 20 Fana, 20 Redemption, 20 HS, rest Defiance, 1 Zeal
Whoever play this build, I am curious about your gear.
I will probably use Haeven's Light (AMN, AMN, SHAEL) and Dracul's Grasp. Probably CoA as a helm. Otherwise I know I will need 50PDR and lot of life leech, also some life, resistance and FHR.
I am not sure :
1) armor: Duress, Stone, Gloom, Guardian Angel. Also Shaftstop could be a choice (I can use HoZ instead of SS then) also I like MF even on questing chracters, so Tals Armor doesn't look too bad. I am afraid of Gloom's Dim Vision overriding my Life Tap though...
2) boots: rare /w resistances? Aldur's? Goreriders?
3) belt: Verdungos/SoE?
etc.
4) merc: defensive or holyfreeze? I think I will rather use defensive if I will choose high-defence armor to see how high my defence can go....
Anybody played this build?
well, Heaven's light can have only 2 sockets...
I've started a martyr once, planning to wear full sazabi set + storm/string for PDR and dracul's for life tap.
I think you should focus on items with damage to undead/demons, I think that this "extra" damage to demons/undead is not taking into account with sacrifice, so you can do more damage while loosing less life. don't quote me on this, I may be mistaken.
A prayer merc with "insight" (if you play RWM, that is) would be good, you'll receive twice the healing of prayer (42life/2secs) not much, but sure it will help.
Keep in mind that leech is 1/3 of the value in hell, and then yo have to apply the drain value of the monsters, so while life tap is inactive, you must aim for around 20% LL, or start zealing until life tap triggers and then switch to sacrifice (this MUST be the strat when facing skellys and other non-leechables)
I blame my memory and d2data.net for being wrong with Haeven's Light.
I am prepared to have around 30LL and wand of life tap on switch...
I don't play RWM, so prayer merc is not an option for me...

A Martyr is a tough character to play. On it's own(AKA Pure Martyr), he deals massive damage and receive a lot too. My test hybrid(Martyr/Cleric) deals great damage while healing himself too. It's one of those rare cases where survival comes before killing power since your killing power depends on your health.
Make sure to have atleast one point in Redemption so you can switch between Redemption/Fanatism to restore your health. Insight/Prayer will work but will not provide enough health to make it a viable option. Martyr + Monster damage = Massive damage.
Life Tap is a good option if you don't want to bother switching auras but since you don't zeal, it might not trigger often. 20% life leech would be a decent amount which would be about 7% life leech on Hell(1/3). It's a matter of stacking stuff to restore your health because if you are healthy, you can kill without fear.
EDIT: 30% Life leech is not easy to get but would be viable. Life Tap wand is a great choice if you're experienced with switch/cast/switch/attack

I say HoZ over Storm any time. Thundergod's to solve the gloom situation and Shaft if you really want the damage reduce. Otherwise Lionheart or GA.
I would stick with gore riders as long as it not gets troubling to max out resistances with charms.
I also think that a Holy Freeze merc would make life much easier. Your defense will be good anyway.
Btw, is this SC or HC?
I considered this build some time ago but kind of lost patience with slow hitting, single target builds after playing concentrate barb.

shaft+CoA+verdungo's will get you 50%PDR. plus dungo's has a huge vita boost and this allows you to use HoZ. i also think Kefir is right and a HF merc would be most valuable. add drac's or life tap wand and after that use everything else for resists and leech.
nice that i drove someone else into my madness. i think i might be attempting this build as well. good luck hrus. let me know how it goes.
