View Full Version : Since everyone said guided arrow sucked for PvM

I'm obviously going to make a guided zon. Well, that's an outright llie, she's level 65, nightmare act 5, and in a few levels she'll move right along to Hell. I play hardcore, so no, I haven't encountered any serious problems yet (else she'd be dead ;) though it is quite funny.

So, what did I do for my build? Well, erm, that's easy... I maxed guided, dumped quite a few points into critical strike, and have a slvl 17 (after +skills, but tha tmight chance) valkyre. Apart from that, I am currently maxing out magical arrow for dealing with PI's. You see, the problem with most PI's is that you cannot leech back any lost mana, and magical arrow quite nicely doesnt need anything at higher levels.

Soo.... I'm sure you all consider me stark raving mad, even more because I am using that nifty amazon bow which is called err, whats its name again, see, I never used it before so I tend to forget it wait let me look oh yes CLIFFKILLER thats its name. I did shael the bastard, but its not really god's gift to amazones. Then again, for some reason I like the KB it offers ^_^.
On switch I have a 3 socket blade bow with tir-tal-amn, that nifty cheapo 3 socket runeword which lets me smite daemons and undead like there's no tomorrow. Well, almost. Oh to hell with it, it sucks, but it fires fast and its cheap ^_^.

The rest of my equip consists of the following:

30% res all ammy
dury shell with mmm no i didnt socket that yet.
rockstopepr with ort in it
some 4% mana leech ring with some res and 15 to dex
some triple res ring (I think) with mana and life
some 20% IAS gloves with res and 3% mana leech
some ubar godly triple res boots (I'm talking a bout 29% FR 19% LR 39% CR 20% run/walk and 25% poison reduce here, which to my eyes consisttutes godly).
edit: oh yes, the belt, its a 16 slot belt with 96 to life and 25% lighting resist.

I have a supplement of +life charms, and my stats look like this atm:
90-ish str
117 dex
the rest went into vit, quite predictable, and I have about 240 of it atm. I'm dubbing whether I want to pump the next 35 or so levels into dex, or vit, as dex constititutes a 1% bonus for dam, and dam is nice.

My might merc has a duskdeep for helmet, and then that uniqe trellised armor (Iron Pelt? yes, thats the one), and erm, *giggle* a 7% life leech pike. No, those are all the mods on the pike. Surprisingly, he survives all but the most hazardous situations.

So, I'm going to level my zon to 70, perhaps 75, and then I'm going to enter hell. And here's my question:

How far do you think I'll get before I die? Today I'll level, tomorrow I'll start. Solo. Please place your bets!

edit2: obviously I voted for option number 10. I shall live to tell the tale! :xmas16:

You are nutz, and you will get away with it :xmas17:

A single shooter has a tuff row to hoe, but you can do it. I haven't looked at the GA stats for a while, but MA gets a consistent AR boost at all levels. I bet decoy is your best friend. :xmas30:

Since you are going slow, attack speed may not be an issue yet. But an 8 frame attack seems like a must to me.

Harmony might work with this.

Baranor
20-12-2005, 10:32
yes, that might me true, but i dont have a harmony. I have a Cliffkiller, and I dont fancy myself trading for the runes before tomorrow.

Significant amusement can be gleamed from my Bosskilling Bow, the tir-tal-amn thingie, with its Thorns... Listor and his buddies had so much fun slapping my valkyre, that they accidently killed themselves on her. My valk did get schratched, but not that much.

My res are surprinsingly good in hell, its 53/75/75/0 atm, and I'll try and fix that first 53% too. Apart from that, I just found a 2 socket Lance for my Mercenary, so he'll be very happy with Amn-Tir (life leech, CB and a little damage never hurt anyone ^_^)

I have got that goldstrike bow somewhere if you are interrested. Or, as my ama is on hold for the moment, you can loan my upped witchwild string.

Extra fast, extra strong undead stygian doll. It runs past your guided arrows and it stands next to you by the time the arrows turned around and hit it. Splash. End of story.

P.S. Best of luck of course, I dó hope you'll get past Baal, but I have my doubts. :)

I think the ancients will do you in also. They can be a pain. But I wish you luck and hope you live to prove me wrong. :xmas17: :xmas23:

I voted you'll make it past baal. I'm most worried for her on the council though. Those guys can be nasty...

Baranor
20-12-2005, 17:50
My personal concern are the ancients. If my Merc doesnt find anything nice by that time, I'm up for a reallllllyyyy nice encounter, seeing that I have only 1200 or so life. I need the CB, but my res are sucky. Then agian, if I make it to the ancients I'll have added some more res in my duriels shell by means of a socket.

Well, tomorrow morning come dawn I shall begin. Sleep well little gobblers, and perhaps I'll amuse you all tomorrow by a zany death story in the blood moor.

You really should consider putting more points into decoy and casting her constantly while using the Edge. More points into decoy=more life=damage returned with thorns. Deeks have 0 defence so they are always get hit, while a high level Valk actually dodges attacks. Side benefits are a stronger valk and a cheap cast.

ConF

Both the council and the ancients only are a few targets, which is what guided arrow is best at. You'll have problems against large groups, which is why I think you'll have problems with stygian dolls or cows (if you ever go there).

Guided arrow is a fairly safe skill to use but deosn't do much dmg in PVM because it's not area effective. Aynways with a good tank it's quite possible to finish the game with just GA, but the game must be in 1 player mode so monsters are easier to kil (if you have a bad wpn).

And imo ancient's shouldnt be so hard since GA is fire&forget skill that doesn't leave you standing for long and biggest danger in fighting ancients is standing in place where they can overrun you.

I'm a little surprised that Diablo has 2 votes so far, but the seal bosses have none. IMO, they are significantly more dangerous to a bower than Diablo himself, especially Mr. Infector of Souls. Anyway, despite that, I believe Barry will do a lot of running away and decoy-casting but eventually take down the seal bosses, and Diablo, move on to the ancients, get amp'd, decide not to reset, since his valk seems to be doing so well, then take a random hit for lights out game over goodnight, sir.

Good luck, though. Nothing feels better than doing something they say can't be done.

mmm noted, I was thinking about that myself, but I was too busy maxing out magical arrow for the *shudder* PI's.

With a slight feeling of the shivers I entered Hell, ran out onto the Blood Moor and began to fight....This is an account of how far I get. Mind you, I’m writing this on the go, so nothing pretty, just the basics.

Act I

Well, I’m out of the Blood Moor and the Den of Evil. Didn’t encounter any problems, though stripping monsters of their health takes a lot of my time. This will take hours I’m afraid, but that won’t stop me! I’ve managed to hit the Cold Plains WP, and I’m off to the next. This is going to be done wp by wp, quest by quest and act by act! And solo. Did I mention solo?

Blood raven is a pushover, even on hell. Some of the boss packs I encountered on the Cold Plains proved to be tough cookies though, and I had to park a PI boss that had magic resistance. Just too dam hard, would have taken me half an hour. After a little while I battled myself to the Stoney Field WP, and from that point on it turned into a real slugfest. By now I’ve realized that with my current weaponry, I might as well use the Tir-Tal-Amn bow, as the Cliffkiller doesn’t really damage things significantly more… it’s the 25% CB that I’ve added by means of Goblin Toes that really does the trick. If I had a significantly more powerful bow like say a Windforce I might dent the enemies with my physical damage, but for now its just for kicks and giggles. The Edge bow fires faster, hence more CB, hence quicker stripping of HP. The good news is that I found a Cruel Pike of the 7% leech for my merc, who seems to fare well by the thing. …

…. And there I almost fell asleep at the keyboard, and when I woke up again, I saw my amazone walking straight for a bunch of skellies with a holy fire boss. BAAAHAAD idea. Woke me up immediately. I continued on, and entered the deep underground. Mmm, all things go supple it seems….
… and ten seconds after that, my valk dies within three seconds, and I make a somewhat hasty and tactical retreat. Recast, decoy on it, feed potion to merc, feed full juvie to merc, and keep going. Well, nasty and all, but I did manage to make it to the Dark Wood. Now, lets see if we can find the WP and smack TreeHugger or whatshisname.

Yes, I found him. He’s cursed, and extra fast, and god knows what else… now I just gotta shoot him ^_^. Well, I have another half an hour before my wife gets home, so I’ll keep on it. I love vacations!

And yet another ten minuets of my life utterly wasted by emptying Tristram and freeing Cain. Obviously, Cain refuses to act as a boss pack distractor and immediately flees to the rogues encampment. Once I DO get back, Akara gives me a totally crappy ring. Nothing new, I usually let the old fart rot but ok, had to do it. Tristram is just so full of nasty monsters, its hard to ignore. Lots of chances to die there.

So, I continued on, entered the Black Marsh, and by then I realized that I had been betting on the wrong horse. I ressurected my merc yet again, stripped him of all his gear, went to act 1 normal, bought a fire rogue, equipped her with the duskdeep and iron pelt, and slapped a kuko on her. Ya. since everyone seems to enjoy cuddling my valk, why not add some AoE huh? Wish I had a rattlecage to seriously annoy anyone caught in the blast, but hey, can't have it all. At least the merc will *hopefully* stay alive that much longer, as she tends to move out of the way.

Well, I'm back to the black marsh now, and to the countess. Lessiee if she can drop DA ROEN!

p.s. no, I didnt run back screaming from the blood moor just about yet.

hi barry.

my amazon wishes you well, take lots of care ....

if your rogue lags behind then sack her and get another rogue, it took me 3 attempts to get an act1 rogue who was on the ball.
get her a Harmony bow as soon as you can.

guided arrow is the best boss killer skill that you can use, when i switch to ga my top end damage is over 5000.
try to put some skill points in multi, this will enable you to obliterate any packs.

if you make it to act2, then becareful when you do the amu quest, only do this quest if corpse's and snakes appear.

edit ... i see that you have posted while i was writing ... well done on the amu quest.

good luck.

Anyways, Í've finished the Claw Viper temple, and no, im not putting any in multi. This is a guided arrow only build. And it SUCKS bigtime, but I'm still going to keep at it :xmas9:

HC Death Certificate:
============

RIP: Our Fallen Friends
Death Certificate

Character name: Shalla_Quickbow
Character level: 74
Character class: Amazone
Character build: Guided Arrow (Which sucks. Did I mention it sucks? IT SUCKS!)
Game difficulty: Hell
Act: 3
Corpse looted: No.
Death Type: Ripped to shreds by a boss pack parked at the Ruinous temple entrance.

So, after cruising, well, no, slugging my way through acts 1, 2 and 3, I cleaned travincal (yeah, those bastard are a pain) and then went back for the Ruined Temple. The Ruined Temple and its temply friends are what HC people like to call our own variant of Russian Roulette, and this proved to be the bullet. I didn't have my valk out as she was poisoned to death in Travincal, went down, and within a second my amazone was dead on the floor. Turned out there was an extra strong cursed might enchanted boss pack of those dam battlemaidens standing right next to the entry. I didnt even get to see it happen as I was pretty much dead before the load-out was over. Mmm, well, wasn't really much I could have done about it, its just one of those things that happen once in a while. But I have, definately, come to a conclusion about Guided Arrow.

DONT MAX IT ITS A WASTE OF POINTS. I swear, A FRIGGIN WASTE OF FRIGGIN POINTS ITS TEH SUK YOU HEAR ME TEH SUCK. What a friggin irritating struggle that was... pfft, glad its over ^_^

I'll go on and make a spearzon in heavy armor now because I simply love the look.

tralalalalala :D hahahahaha it was fun though, lots of hard work, but that happens sometimes.

I am sorry for your loss. See you at the funeral. I am also sorry I didn't think about those critters who wait at the entrance to those temples and hit hard. I should have though of those. It's not fair and I think we should all go out and kill an archer pack in memory.

How was Hell Duriel?

Maybe I will sticky this for a while so people understand about GA.

Baranor
23-12-2005, 09:37
Seriously? All you need to drag yourself through hell with an amazone are the following:

Crit at 66% or something, Pierce at 51%, Max Penetrate, Max Valk, Max Decoy and spend the rest into the passives to dodge stuff. Then, get yourself a Kuko, Goblin Toe and a Duress Armor, 20% IAS and max res.

Thats it. Really. The criticrusher effect will do everything in. Just takes some time, but since everyone will huddle around your valk and your decoy who are both pretty immortal, you can and will punish them. Criticrush appearently even worked on those dam PI's that I engaged.

And that's what I used once I figured out that guided didnt work very well unless you have say a windy or another sick bow. Its not that the single guided doesnt pack enough punch, because a single guided is pretty powerfull with the right bow, but it is that there is no way to demolish packs quickly. Now If I hadn't insisted on only using guideds, I'd have had an easy time.... max out penetrate, few points in pierce, 5-7 in multi, problem solved, just spam and maim.

But errr, blabla, lets be honest here, not having the valk out was just plain DUMBASS alrighty? Yeah? Ok, because, erm, there are plenty of people that have solo-ed hell and all, and the main thing is that you always should be CAREFULL! and that's it, really.

ThunderStrokes suck.

Wow, 15%ias and -15%Lighting.

Titans= 30%Fr/W, 20Dex/Str. And, is better.

Only FC zon's use Ts.

Real Good Zons use either Eth-up'd Titans or, EDemon arch.
