Sorry, not exactly gameplay-related. A story idea brought up during an RP here on the site made me curious and I wanted to ask the Necro experts...

Is a Necro's ability inherent, or does he chose to follow the path and must learn his skills? If, say, my father and his father before him were Priests of Rathma, does that mean I'll be expected to have the same skills, or will that mean they'll be expecting me to "go into the family business" and learn the trade (though I may not have any inherent skill at all)?

Just curious... When I play the various characters, I like to roleplay them a bit in my mind, instead of just hitting keys :D

Thanks!

Obviously, Necromancers can never be anything but Necromancers.

They are stupid nobodiies with no abilities at all, but they suck big time at learning skills such as Whirlwind or Frozen Orb --- they aren't even able to reach level 1. All they can ever hope for is learning necromancer skills.

Well, in the D2 universe, everyone starts out as a nobody, with no abilities whatsoever, even though they all seem to be grown up already.

Despite that, they are still locked into exactly one path. If it looks like a sorceress, it can never be anything but a sorceress.

This also leaves some interesting issues about reproduction. It seems reasoable to assume that if a necromancer (always male) and a sorceress (alway female) get together, then their child will be a necromancer if it's a boy, and a sorceress if it's a girl. And fo some obscure reason, that child will have exactly the same appearance as the respective parent.

So maybe people in D2 aren't reproducing like this. Maybe they just clone themselves biologically only, so the clone looks the same, but has no skills.

If you look at skills and classes from a RP perspective some classes are born with their innate abilities and some have to study.
Sorcs are bone with their powers and can only be sorcs. They are trained by their respective order.
The Necros powers seem to be innate for the most part. They deal with talking to the spirits of the deceased and forcing these spirits to do certain tasks. You are either born with the ability to see dead people or you are not. The Poison part of the P&B Tree is learned. It stems from alchemical research.

Ever dueled a zealsorc?

Anyhow -
Only the spellcaster types have instinctual skills. The barbarian LEARNS to spin fast enough and build up his rage to whirlwind; while the assassin relies on the magic of the runes in her claw for her to perform the Barbarian's skill.
