View Full Version : Minimum level to kill Diablo?

I am a pretty new player, having not played since 1.0-something and not seriously even then.
I just made a Fishymancer and what fun it is! I followed Fishy's guide to the letter and was amazed at how well it does. Thanks, Fishy!
My only issue I ran into was the big D himself. I was 27th level if I recall correctly. I had my clay golem, 1 point in mastery, was level 25 in RS and 8 or 9 in SM with 2-4 plusses from equipment. I also had my point in summon resist. I had my lightning and fire resist pretty high up (both at 70 or above). Despite several attempts, one of which I died from, I was unable to kill Diablo. Then i went back, did a few Meph runs and Izual, etc. and at 29 or 30 was able to do it. I believe the two points between the attempts went into SM.
Was it unrealistic to expect to be able to do D at level 27? Mind you, this is a completely non-twinked character, which is what drew me to Fishy's design in the first place.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts and Fishy thanks again for your guide. I am having a blast with this guy.

Not unrealistic at all.
For me anyways, the big "trick" to killing bosses is effective use of Decrepify. I believe Fishy says to get it before killing duriel, which does make it a lot easier. On the other hand, Fishy is banking on you playing single player with players8 on.
A good comprimise is to just get decrep when you naturally can, likely sometime in late act 3 or early on in act 4.
Once you have it, you can beat bosses that would normally be impossible. The slowing effect of it, combined with a couple good puches from the clay golem will have any boss attacking approximately once every 3-5 seconds, which is so slow that your skeletons will probably be able to regenerate between hits.

Sorry, I should have mentioned this. I had and was using decrepify. Basically, he wasted my skeletons rather quickly and the Golem was gone immediately. Largely due to his fire ring.
Glad to hear I wasn't being too idealistic! :uhhuh:

I see.
That is interesting that he was able to kill all your skeletons (and even you once) with the combined slow effects on. In my case, I was at lvl 28 or so, but I think I only lost 1 or 2 skellies, and the area had plenty of corpses available so that I might recast.
I think I was using a prayer merc from act 2 (ideal of course in NM act 2's might merc, but I wasn't there yet!), so that helped my skellies with their already insane regeneration rate.
My equipment was pretty much crap, I was using a "Lore" hat for the skills and a wand with +1 to summoning skills, most of the rest of my equipment was low level rare/magical crap, so I don't think I had a huge advantage there.
You sound like you're fairly well versed in the game, so I don't think you're making huge play errors, I really don't know what the difference was. You're sure decrep was active on him the whole time? It only lasts a few seconds and then has to be recast. I think D only cast the fire ring thingy once while I was fighting him, possibly his first move. Following that the skeletons all up in his grill made his following attacks almost all melee attacks, which was only probably 5-10 considering his speed.
Anyhow, it's over now, I'm just overanalyzing. Continue to enjoy your necro, they never stop being fun!

Do you have a point in summon resist? That makes a big difference against the Big D.

ok this is what I did when I ran into him... have all my warriors hit him, summon gumby on him, cast decrep, mer poke away and when I saw 1 warrior die cast life tap so all could heal then cast decrp again... if you see that youve lost 1/2 of your army or more then run and summon up more in the rooms where the seals are at... their should be a few bodies left... also cast a tp enter and get back so that Diablo dosent finish off your remainning forces wile you summon back up... if all else fails just get help from a paly or a druid that can beef you up (could even talk to them before hand and ask them not to kill Diablo)

Yeah, I had my point and perhaps even two due to a +skills item. I am beginning to think it was largely user error. It was my first time facing Diablo in several years and I probably just didn't have the skills in place yet. It got easier as I got the hang of keeping both Decrep and Amp on him at all times and recasting. Plus a couple levels and extra points in SM couldn't have hurt.

I think amplify damage and decrepify will cancel eachother out, so you'll only get the one that you cast last to be actually active. That said, you'll want to use decrepify on Diablo or any act boss.
