Hi all,

I have a couple of concerns with D2.
Infact two questions, beware I am not the most computer liturate so would like any answers in plain english :)

1) My son and I both have comps that can easily handle D2, is it possible to hook the two computers up to play co-op with out having to be online? would a simple 'crossover cable' work and if so how?

2) Running Windows XP the game does not run full screen, is there a patch/fix for this that I have missed?.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Hey,

You'll need to bear with me too, since I'm about to head out, so I'm sort of going through this quick (and I'm sure someone will pick up on this after me later on. Likewise, I'll probably check back later).

1) Yes, I've heard of several people being able to successfully play a TCP/IP game using a crossover cable. Several things that I remember reading regarding this. You might need to make sure both computers are in the same IP range. Also, make sure Windows XP's Service Pack 2 firewall is setup correctly.

It sounds to me like you might have tried connecting both computers up with a crossover already? How'd it go, were you able to see or ping each other (to ping, click start --> run --> cmd, and then type ping ComputerName, where ComputerName is the name of the other computer).

2) By default, the game should run in full screen mode. If your running the game through a shortcut (which might be on desktop, for example), then the shortcut might be modified to run in window mode. If you right-click and choose properties on it, make sure there's no -w at the end of the target line.

Hi mate,

thanks for the quick replys.

No have not tryied to use the crossover but when selecting multiplayer the game does not seem to have a LAN setting, must I use the TSP/IP? Do I need seperate internet log ins? (what I am trying to avoid.) Just want to co-op with son.

Ref Grapics. I am only getting 800x600 max allowed in the grphic 'options' from game. this does not fit the screen and the other setting only fills half the screen.

Cheers,

Andrew.

800x600 is the highest resolution supported.

You can probably connect the computers through a LAN. Then, when choosing TCP/IP from D2, simply type in the IP address to the computer that is hosting the game. If you want to find out your (local) IP, just go to the Start-menu, choose Run, the type in "cmd" without the quotes. When you get the command window open, just type in "ipconfig", again without the quotes, and there should be a line starting with "IP Address". Host a game and have the other one connect to it. If cmd doesn't work, then try "command" instead. Depending on what version of Windows you have, either will work.

I haven't tried this out myself, so please answer if it worked or not. If it doesn't, we'll try to come up with something more clever :)

You will not need 2 seperate internet logins in order to play over a network. In fact, if you want to just play locally together, you don't even need an Internet connection at all. If you both want to play on battle.net, then you'll to be connected to an Internet, but even then you should be able to share it.

To play a co-op game locally (no Internet required), in the D2 game you'll want to go to "Other Multiplayer" --> "TCP/IP Game". If I remember correctly, if the crossover cable isn't connected between the computers, then the options here (Host Game, Join Game) will be blocked out. After connecting the crossover cable though, you should be right.

One of you will make a game, and the other will join by typing in the host IP address. The IP Address will be listed both on the TCP/IP menu and in the game anyway (when the map is viewed, by default with the Tab button).

The main problem that I forsee would be if the computers do not see each other after connecting the crossover cable, at which point we'd need to do some other steps.

Best of luck

G'day, another Aussie!!! I'm a brissy ite.

I play D2 with my 6yr old son too! But why wouldn't you want to be on the net? You can creat games with passwords so only you two can join them. Going online is soo much better! You can even do it with dial up, its not that much slower. The best thing on the internet is you can also play with us here at the forum, if we are on the same realm/channel. I play on the asia realm. there are so many cool things with online playing. I can even give you some good gear if you want. But you have to creat online chars. If you want to PM me, (private message) just click on my name in red, and it will bring up a message screen to me!

Computers are hooked up and the IP's show, however neither can connect to the other as it says 'cannot join server'

So one of you have hosted a game? Are the two IP addresses in the same range (ie xxx.xxx.xxx.yy and xxx.xxx.xxx.zz, where all the x's are the same)?

Are you able to ping each other's computers?

I suppose there could be a firewall problem aswell. If nothing else works, try to disable the firewall on the computer that is hosting the game for a few minutes only, and see if that works.

This is totally to late ,since he got it fixed. however i read through the whole threat, and did not notice you guys advicing him with this. When using crossover cable ( i can only say for Cat5,as in i use CATegory5),without hub/router/and without internet. To make d2 work in the way he was asking, what he could do is, Set both pc's up a in the same "network group" as in call it " Kitchen room" -and then set the Ip's as one of you guys said,to close range.( i have 2 different network groups(for non internet things) at home, and a 16 hub lan connected to router to Broadband cable connection.(foor internet, its awesome).

if it makeks sinse sorry..but i do know once its in my hands. i set up my basements Lan. 16 wall plugs RJ45. i did the damn whole thing, from cropping the cables, slipping in each of 8 colored cables ..arghh.. was a pain..BUT IT worthed..no more cables running through middle of the room for CS LANs or D2.

aUSSIE i played lan d2 as well, but with 3 brothers. was hella of a time! But going internet, sure seems pointless in starting over.but once you found a nice guy to rush you or glitch rush you. Internet is better.Of curse comes with the spammers and scammers and ohh hackers..
