New Necro here to check things out.

Hey folks, how are you guys!

I'll start off by saying I've never been a necro, I've always played barbs, I've had probably 5 - 6 barb builds and always liked them but now it's time to try something new.


What do you guys think a good build is to start off, in order to learn the class and then base future build decisions off of?

Looking for a good solid type of build that will get me into hell mode and then I can base decisions off of my playstyle at that high end game and make my own builds from then on out.



I know the barb forums were tons of help when I started so I am sure you guys will be helpful too.

My first character ever was a necro, and then I never made another one until a few days ago. That first necro of mine was a bone necro, and was horribly weak. Even with synergies, my understanding is that bone is still pretty useless unless you're getting something like 20 to skills from your items.

My current necro is a Fishymancer, played pretty much to the Tee as written in the guide, with a few more live points in amp damage, and holding off on making revives for as long as possible, as they bug me.

This necro is incredibly strong, can handle anything and is totally item independent. I just died for the first time with him tonight, and retrieving my body was not even vaguely difficult, which is nice, feeling like your character is not tied to his gear. Makes him feel very "personal" because his gear can be anything I want, and it all still works! :thumbsup:

Welcome Newcomer to The Darkness. Grab a brew :drink: and feel free to raise some corpses.

As Undercat suggested try out a Fishymancer. They are easy to play, not gear dependant and they have enough points left to try some experimentation if you are so inclined.

My first character ever was a necro...very effective until i got into the later levels of Hell.
But I didn't really decide on a final build until it was too late...he's supposed to be a bonemancer, but I wasted a lot of skill points in poison skills, curses, and summoning skills that I didn't need. Now it's damn near impossible for me to make solo baal runs in hell unless i get really generous monster spawns.

My recomendation is to pick your build early and stick with it. My new necro is also a bonemancer/summoner hybrid. He's very effective with synergies all up there.
I have bone spirit/spear maxed out, fire golem maxed and I put about 3 points into revive. (after all the +to skills, i get about 10 in revive, and you really can't handle that many more since they only last 3 minutes.) The rest of the points go into bone synergies and Raise Skel Mastery (to help the revives) and Golem Mastery. My minons don't do much damage at all, but they have a ton of life, so they get in the way and make good fodder. I just stand back and fire spears or spirts (pending on the crowd size and if there are unique/champions to deal with first) It take a little longer to make a kill, since bone spirt doesn't do more than 1300 damage at the most. But once i get a few bodies, out comes CE and heads roll from there. It is really quite effective....just don't die. Cuz if you die, you lose your minons. ANd if you don't have those, you'll die right off trying to get your body back.

Put all your skill points into Energy/Vitality (i did about 50/50) and I put enough into strength to use my Trang Set.

I had about 10 barbs I made ranging from a cryer to conc barb to frenziers, none of them have been this much fun so far! :)

gear for you:
Trang Helm (um)
Trang shield (p diamond)
Trang armor (p topaz or w/e)
Trang Belt
Trang Gloves
rare rings +str/dex/resists (or nagels for mf)
+3 summon ammy with xxxx 2nd mod/+2 all necro with good 2nd mods
Arm of King Leoric

might merc with insight for sure

good luck on getting trangs... im sure if you have 5 geared barbs (or w/e) you'll be able to pick some pieces up

i love trangs, especially for summoners

Nah I don't have the barbs anymore, I quit playing D2 and started playing World of Warcraft for about a year, I lost all my chars during that period.

Not a big deal though I'll get my gear and everything up there again soon enough!
