View Full Version : Is there some sort of etiquette on battle.net?
While I have played single playerr extensively I'm rather new to battle.net, so I'm not aware of any unwritten rules that may be applied.
Well, yesterday,an amazon started sursing around, and if I managed to get things straight (I.E. after removing all noobies and similar form the context) she claimed "you make lightning kill people and take their potions".
Anyone knwo what the hell is that supposed to mean? Is there some sort of convention on who gets which potions go to who? Are there conventions on who picks up which drops? At first, I thought things got discussed, but apparently, it's all about who clicks faster, and I began to act accordingly.
Thanks for your help.
No, there's no real etiquette for online games. There's alot of people out there that'll just do what they want when they want.
As a common courtesy though, I generally leave all the drops/potions to the people who are doing the most work. For example, if I'm a melee char walking through chaos sanctuary with some sorcs, I'll leave all the mana potions to them, as well as some of the health ones, because chances are I'm not doing much because of Iron Maiden.
If, however, a unique or a good item drops (such as a high rune), you may as well go and try to get it. Unless the people your playing with seem overly nice then chances are they'll do the same. The sad(?) state is that there's a very high chance that you'll never meet these people again, so don't be too concerned about their opinion of you.
On that note, if you do want to meet good people to game with, then check out the Player Matchup forum here (if you haven't already). You'll probably be more likely to meet people who'll share the drops here though battle.net directly.
Edit: Oh, and with regards to the "you make lightning kill people and take their potions" statement, the only thing I can think of is if your group was attacking a lightning enchanted boss, and you weren't doing much damage to it. Regardless of the damage done to such a boss, it'll still send out it's little charges bolts, which could prove lethal to alot of players. Also, did you pick up any potions that dropped out of any players corpses?
Humm, a blizzard sorceress is not doing negligible damage. And I do wonder what kind of player has trouble getting enough gold to restock on health potons at level 53...

Generally there are not much rules in Battle Net, mainly because everyone is anonym and doesnīt have to face consequenses of rude behavier. If not agreed in an other way, drops are open to everyone, so the first to click on it gets it. However there are a couple of things that are bad mannered:
1) Taking gold or potions from people that died
2) Overuse of some spells ( summons, Mindblast, Bonewall and Boneprison )
3) Spamming the same text over and over again ( pp, pp, pp, tp, tp, tp )
When you are in a series of runs with the same guys, they will probably tell you the channel, in which they meet and then there might be some agreements within the group:
1) Teleporter gets Rejuvs.
2) Drop Share, announcing which players turn it is to pick up Baals drops.
3) Free low and middle item exchange between players ( need the shaft I just found for your merc / anyone got Sol for an Insight )
In your special case Orphan is most likely right. You obviously were fighing a MSLE ( Multi Shot Lightning Enchanted ) opponent and your hits caused some lightning. Up to this point everything is fine, but you then seem to have taken potions of players that died due to it and that is bad mannered.

Humm, yes, that could explain it. Not me, though. I pick up any mana potion I see, but health potions ( which the amazon was complaining about) are barely needed.
Thanks, though

There are no rules on B.Net. It's a wild world filled with idiots and scumbags along with a few nice people. You'll meet tons of spamming idiots and those who refuse to listen to simple common sense and do whatever the hell they want to do. Learn to use the squelch button; it can at time, literally save your sanity.

Each players have their own set of rule. Cows are a good example. I met a Sorc that was cowing many players under two condition: Not killing the King and leaving the Charms that drop to her.
Rules depend on the situation and on the player: there's no set-in-stones rules besides the obvious ones like spam.

Well I guess Iīm an optimist and try to think that there is some common sense and fairness in every player. *waits unill everybody stopped laughing* Most of the time it is not the way, that people want to behave bad, but donīt know how to behave right, because they have not experienced something else. If you take the time to explain them why f.e. the teleporter gets the Rejuvs and that their gain is fast runs that donīt bare danger for their chars, then at least 90% are willing to play with a minimum of rules.
Iīm on a mission from god. :D

in my opinion there are no rules in diablo.
jus dont nk people (naked kill)
dont steal items that belong to other people (cuz i bet they worked their butts off for them)
dont try to scam people
and be curtious to people.
The lack of common courtesy is what drove me to abandon the realms and make the switch to single player exclusively. I've never regretted it. ATMA and the ability to manipulate the number of players in the game, plus the ability to keep a good map for mf'ing purposes, easily override any downside.

Yes, great advice from the previous posters I agree. One thing I also try to pay attention to is not to try to grab an item from a chest/tomb/whatever that another player just opened. Seems to me if I open a chest I should get the contents and viceversa. Not a big deal with potions and so on, but it will irritate you greatly when you open a chest and another player just rushes to grab that unique ammulet. I can tell you be always on the lookout and stay sharp with those fingers. Amazing items can drop anywhere, even from a tomb in Cats, where I often found rare rings/ammys. With monsters as long as everyone is contributing to the fight then it's pretty much free for all on the drops, that's fine.
Myself personally.. I agree with the chest thing...
I hate when I am being a nice guy and I am doing BAAL runs for a group of low levels. Lets say I am level 76 and you guys are all 25 and I am doing BAAL runs helping you level. Chances are I killed it I get it..
I have in instances just moved out of the way fo the minions and let the low level get swarmed and killed...
I getnerally go MFing with only one other guy. I know that hurts my drop odds. but we have a system. If the drop is specifically good to the character you are using then you get it...
If the drop is not but can be traded for maybe a good rune lets say and IST.. then we will trade it for a number of lower runes like 4 ums (Or whatever it's actually worth)
My .02 cents
OK, me back here.
Yesterday sure was a bad day, generally speaking. As the badness comes under battle.net etiquette, I cme here, hoping for a friendly shoulder to cry on, a pat on the back and a "there, there".
I start a NM game, intending to hunt for Baal. While in the WSK, I happen to find a jewel of ease. So, I return to the stash, grab a second jewel of fervor from before and socket them into my prize posession: a Bonehew (played on the ladder for about 3 days now, I spent my first 6 or 8 perfect gems on it, culdn't believe my luck). So, posessing a bonehew with requirements along the line of 130ish str instead of around 190ish str, I want to put it onto my merc, which would give the guy some firepower, which is exactly what I need, because my pure cold sorceress simply cannot do anything in hell due to the bloody cold immunes.
So, I grab the bonehew and try to put it onto the merc. Won't work, still needs the level req. I try to put the bonehew into the cube for later, but can't because it contained some pgems. So, I drop it onto the ground for just a split second to reopen the stash to put it into long term storage...
...and the bonehew is not there anymore, replaced by a player that sure as hell hadn't joined the game at the time I made it, and certainly hadn't even made an introductory hi. The guy grabbed it in a second!
And of course wouldn't give it back.
Now, I may be paranoid, but why would the guy be standing next to me, silent, for a while (socketing, inv. shuffling and so on takes time, and manage to grab the item in the one second it's on the ground? I say the guy was waiting for it, as it often happens with people rummaging in the stash that they drop something on the ground.
So, for the record:
A) Nice etiquette means that stuff dropped by players is to be left alone. if you do pick it up, ask the player if you can have it, If not, return it.
B) I am now allergic the the words "item plz". That was all the guy would say when I asked him to return my stuff. Repeatedly.
C) If you do something as nasty, have the common courtesy NOT to continue with "Quest 5 now"...
Iuris, seriously pissed off. And embarassed, of course, I shouldn't be so newbieiish, but still...
Never, ever drop thing on the ground in open games, and NEVER drop thins of value.

I'm fairly new to bnet and thought about going back to single player only because I couldn't get anything good from andy/meph runs because items were snatched up faster than I could click. So I decided that when I wanted to do an andy, mephisto, etc. run I make a game password it and do my run with all drops going to me. Then when I'm just leveling or just playing then I'll either join a game or start a game for everyone to play. That way I can still get good drops because you're a little more spread out while fighting, depending on the map, so I can usually pick up anything that drops near me. By doing this I now can play on bnet and enjoy my time there and meet a few good people at the same time.
