I'm brand new to the forums, but I always use them for reference on trades and builds, just never posted. I'm using this (http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=510) Avenger build as a guideline. I'm basically getting my kicked in Hell Act 1, I'd like to know what kind of items to hunt for, to give me enough defense, resistance and damage to survive solo.

Here's what I'm currently equipped with (@ lvl 66):

Amulet: Highlord's Wrath
Ring 1: Raven Frost
Ring 2: Manald Heal
Helm: Delirium (Bone Visage)
Armor: Smoke Runeword (Ghost Armor)
Belt: String of Ears
Gloves: Ghoulhide (soon to be Soul Drainer)
Boots: Gore Riders
Weapon 1: Iron Ward
Shield 1: (Low - 168%) Herald of Zakarum (1os)
Weapon 2: Baranar's Star
Shield 2: Mosier's Blessed Circle (w/ 2 Perfect Diamonds)

Skills: all necessary prerequesites, 16 to each resist, 25 conviction, 15 vengence, 10 holy shield.

Resistances: 20, 31, 55, 25

So! In my inventory I'm holding Alma Negra (w/ Perfect Diamond), Guardian Angel (which is suggested by the guide, but I don't get any resistances from it, only higher max resists). Questions: can you suggest a weapon that will give higher physical/elemental damage/+skill bonuses/crushing blow, etc? Can you suggest any means of upping my resistances with items, without suffering in other areas (ie: +skills, defense, etc)? Keep in mind, I'm not rich but I have means of getting whatever is required, so if you could... give me attainable items and perfect items when I can afford em.

Thanks!!

First of all lvl 66 in hell is a bit lowish too. Doesn't forbid you from playing but well the more levels you have the merrier (extra life and chance to hit among others).

At level 85 you can equip an azurewrath,it has +1 skill, decent physical and good magic and cold damage as well. Superfast weapon,no crushing blow.
A stormlash has good physical damage, crushing blow, static field and a healthy dose of lightning damage as well. Quite fast too but no +skills.
Astreon's caduceus is not bad either,it has skills, crushing blow, magic damage, speed but no ele damage. I could safely call it endgame item, aren't you satisfied with it?
From high runewords famine deals great physical and elemental damage and it is itd too and doom gives skills and holy freeze aura that combined with your conviction will hurt a lot.

Chains of honor is the armor that gives what you want, skills, resists etc. It is expensive.
A good upgraded vipermagi (umed) would actually suit you with the skill and resists.

Items you can use to get resists are sazabi helm which gives skill too and ik belt.

An avenger on a budget?

Firstly, your equipment set up isn't great. Highlords amulet is only good for the skill boost and ias. Deadly strike and crushing blow are very secondry attributes for an avenger, primarily you want damage and more damage.
Alma is a nice shield, but the off weapon enhanced damage doesn not boost Vengeance damage as much as a Herald of zakarum does. Compare the two sheilds with your baranar's star and compare the damage. You should find that Herald gives you more.
Same with the boots. Crushing blow chance & deadly strike is not as good as war travellers because of the chance of these things happening. On average the extra damage from war travellers works better.

Basically, it's your resists. You taking too much damage from elemental damage and you are not leeching it back quick enough thanks to your low life leech and low physical damage.

Id suggest;

Vampire gaze.
guardian angel.
herald of zakarum.
lava gouts, LoH or any ias gloves.
String of ears.
Raven frost.
Rare life leech ring.
War travellers.

Ideally, you want about 7% mana leech and 20% life leech and high resists.

For the weapon, Baranar's star is what I call the minimium required for an end game weapon. You can finish the game with it, but only solo. Higher players setting will make it next to immpossible.
Good and fairly cheap weapon is rune master. good base damage and further enhanced by socketing. Otherwise look at the cheaper rune words such as oath.
